K&N CAI

I’m new to cold air intakes. Is it true this is an oil filter and needs to be cleaned a lot? If so how often and are there any downsides?

This has been talked about on a lot of camaro forums and facebook pages. You will have to clean the air filter, but you will have to do that with the stock one as well. The problem with the K&N is heat soak, which leads to loss in performance. So, thats a pretty big downside, spending a few hundred to lower your horsepower.

I just picked up a AFE Momentum GT intake while it was on sale.

gauze filters will fill up faster than paper if you want to keep the air resistance lower than that of paper for any given time.

There have been performance tests done on these and paper filters and paper is a fairly linear graph that starts pretty high and goes up to some "unacceptable" level.

Gauze filters start out much lower but their curve is exponential instead of linear, and will cross the paper graph well before the paper reaches the end-life limit ...and the gauze will reach that end-life limit of air resistance much earlier than the paper.

Where real life and this test differ is when you replace the paper filter with a cone gauze filter that contains a much larger surface area than the drop-in gauze filters typically have. That helps with increasing your time till cleaning a bit. But you'll still want to clean your gauze filters at least twice as frequently as your paper ...or at least once a year ..whichever is shorter as a good rule of thumb.
