Looks like you are on your own if the oil pump fails anyway since yours has been tuned and modded. My concern is for folks like me with a stock ZL1 that may have a so called ticking time bomb and don’t know if the pump is one of the bad ones showing up in other ZL1s in case of a power train warranty claim which mine will be up in April 2022.

I don't believe there are good pumps and bad pumps. I think it's a marginal design at best, one that will have far more than the usual number of failures, but that failures will still be limited to a fairly small percentage of cars. If 5% fail, that's still way more than average as far as oil pumps go.
Franky, I can't see how my pump has held up as long as it has. My '16 LT1 has a weaker crank and I'm a good bit above stock ZL1 power levels.

Yeah, I know my warranty is long gone. My concern is just operating it generally, occasionally I take a long road trip in the ZLE and having an idea if my oil pump is one GM at least tried to improve upon after the initial round of failures, if they ever did at all. I had an oil pump fail on my 2005 GTO and I know what to do when the first signs show up that it is taking a dump. I’d rather have that happen closer to home if possible and am considering replacing it anyway. I am just curious if GM has made one or more efforts to change the pump, and if so, when.

Yeah I understand but I don’t think we will ever know if the pumps were improved or not.

That seems to be Katech's view, and they also said they "can't see that the '19+ is any stronger". Hopefully they will post up the video they promised

Really did you expected another answer? Who would buy the katech´s pump if they affirm the new P/N from GM is solid?

Sure, I get it - just hoping they will provide details on route of failure (e.g. stress cracks in the housing, etc)

Dealers sure aren't going to research this, and if GM knows they aren't saying anything (for obvious reasons)

how big of a pain in the ass is it to change the oil pump in these cars?

Mine is a 2018 (not sure what month it was built) i'd have to check the sticker on the door.

Years ago?

As long as you post a standard youtube URL (and NOT give it a mobile URL), it will embed.

If I had a '17/'18 out of warranty I think it would be worth it for peace of mind if you plan to keep the car - maybe $1200 in labor?
