My neighbor came up to me and said "so you got a new whip, huh? Looks nice...since when is a new car called "whip"? Where or how did this word become slang for car?
Slang now days! Hard to understand these terms.

I've heard them called: Whip Wheels Ride Coach (a.k.a. Un Coache) Bitch Getter P*$$y Wagon (sorry mom), Shaggin' Wagon, or simply Wagon Hoopty Jalopy Motorcar (or just motor) Tin Lizzie Chariot Machine And have heard them described: Tough (tuff) Bad (bad-a$$) Sick Wicked Awesome Cool Righteous (Well, Camaros anyway. Mustangs often don't get called those. More like: crap, mus-stank, P.O.S., Found On Road Dead, shit-stang, moms car)

It's actually wip or work in progress. It doesn't really fit a new vehicle in most cases unless you plan on modding your car out.

It stems from when the reigns and whip of the wagon driver ceased being a thing with the advent of the steering wheel... (Didn't know what to call it perhaps?) And also lends to using the term "whipped the steering wheel" when describing a sharp turn. Whip was the term your great grandpa used to call his ride.
