Why do people modify ZL1s?

Curious about why the heck some (a ton apparently) people modify their ZL1s for even more power/louder exhausts.

Like, who says 650hp is not enough 😂?

I’ve modified slower cars before so I get it, but I struggle to hold onto the steering wheel while WOT + changing gears lol.

It’s pretty dang loud stock, but I also drive a ‘Vert so it’s more raw for me probably. Interested in seeing people’s responses

We are all just a little different. In coupe form, it is nowhere near loud enough for me. Headers make these cars sound the way they are supposed to, in my opinion. I will likely do a cam to mine as well, just creating the car I want is all. I think 650 will be enough, it will be sound and character that I would be after and some extra HP won't be unwelcome.

Come on man your here and from Texas ! Freedom, I think it's everyone wants a certain custom to there cars that fit the individual. The ZL1 has a lot of power, but for me a cam and a 2650 would make it a perfect 10, with a tune and the right air fuel ratio you can run cooler, I just got get through the warranty and it paid for.

Because for some, 650hp is not enough, for others you get use to 650 hp rather easily and then you want more.

Valid responses. I’m sure it’s much quieter in coupe form.

Interesting to see that 650hp is still not completely satisfactory to some.

650hp is good enough for me. Hell, I know I have never even gotten close to this beast's limits yet (and I consider myself a pretty good driver who has had advanced/track driver training, just not on something like this.)

Plus I would consider myself a "stock guy" meaning no to little aftermarket items (especially when it comes to cosmetics).

But I get it for those that want to tinker.

It's the same thought as why do people buy a car meant for the road course and only drag or roll race it.

Because they can and will. I just don't agree with those that get the 1LE package for the ZL1 and only drag or roll race it..... but, it's their car.

That’s such a waste…

Because it’s addicting. Not modified yet but wouldn’t mind another 100-150 ponies on tap just for the hell of it.

Fair question… for me there are a couple answers. Number one, part of the enjoyment I get from owning this vehicle is not just from waiting all week until Saturday morning when I get to wipe it down and take it out for a drive, but equal part detailing it, and modifying it. Looking back at the cards that I found this one is no different, I get an equal part of pleasure researching, planning, and doing the work myself, I get just as much fun out of doing that as I do actually driving in. The second reason is, this is still a pony car. This is not a supercar. We will never be able to say that Chevy spared no expense. It’s actually quite the opposite, Chevy had to pinch a lot of pennies to make a car that’s great at this price point. For me, 650 fly wheel horsepower is not enough for a car this heavy. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very quick car in stock form. But after you drive that car for a while and you start getting used to the power level, I don’t know how people don’t start wanting more. I can tell you that once I went from 650 fly wheel horsepower to 650 rear wheel horsepower, this thing is so much more fun in every way, and I see no reason that GM could not have done this from the factory. Even if they would’ve at least given us a flex fuel sensor with the capability of running 85 or a blend, this car would’ve been at a whole new level. I guess that’s also why I’m planning my third round of mods which will add another hundred horsepower. Pulling the engine to add the cam it’s going to be so much fun for me. Hopefully that gives you some insight. I think it all comes down to peoples aptitude, interests, and how their hobbies and skill sets intersect with the toys that they have. For many of us on the forum, modifying our cars is 50% of the fun of owning one. Hopefully that helps you understand. Good luck on your journey.

Great answer. It’s nice to see people so passionate about wrenchin’

I already have a few mods planned but all superficial and practical (tow/bike rack from Thule).

I built my '14 to about 700 at the wheels, and unfortunately it was totaled in March. I recently replaced it with a bone stock '17. Even though the '14 was a heavier car, the '17 just feels like it needs more power. I think for a lot of people (myself included), once you get used to a certain amount of power, anything less feels kinda "meh."

(The '17 is an amazing car though! Even though I have had to completely re-learn how to drive a GM manual. I've been driving GM manuals as my daily drivers for 30 years, but this one is killing me. Lol. I am going to pull out my HPT dongle and fix it one of these days.)
