Warranty start date
Why would a warranty for a new car start before the vehicle is sold? I'm looking at a brand new car on a dealer's lot but GM website shows the warranty started as of January 2022.

My initial thought would be that there is some type of dealer warranty that starts after build because GM technically sells the vehicle to the dealer first. Then the customer warranty starts once it is sold at a dealership? One of the dealership people on the forum might have a better idea.

Could be that the vehicle was a service loaner, or demo. Depending on how the dealer reports those types of vehicles, the warranty will trigger upon the RDR. Our service loaners are sold to the dealership and plated. Or it was a cancelled deal. The dealer may have RDR'd it to get their numbers in for the month and have not cancelled the RDR. I'm not sure how that case would affect the warranty if the sale was cancelled...
Generally, if the vehicle was a service loaner or demo, the vehicle then gets sold as a certified unit, which should be made clear about the vehicle. Not always the case for demo's as employee's are pulled from them before 7,000 miles (used to be around that number) and they still get sold as 'new' but still need to made clear upon sale it was a demo vehicle. As JP stated regarding a dealer warranty period... it's possible the vehicle had a recall or bulletin already that needed warranty repairs before selling off the lot. Best bet, question the dealer. The loss of a couple months warranty time can def be a headache when the time comes!

I called the dealer and it turns out the car is not on the lot anymore. It seems like it was sold a long time ago and the website has not bee updated. I looked up 3 or 4 other cars listed on the website and they all show the warranty starting several weeks to moths earlier. I think they've all been sold and they're keeping them on the website to attract potential buyers.
