Driving 1LE in EXTREME cold

Hey Folks,

Since I got my 1LE back in November, my family back home is wanting me to bring it during Christmas to they can see it. I've been reading some things that's making me start to question driving it back to Alabama for the holidays.

Since the 1LE has summer only tires, I'm fearful of cracks in the tire or other issues. It's supposed to around 15F degrees ambient when we're leaving Friday night, and lows in the 10s the whole weekend. We have a 2-hour drive Friday night. Staying overnight Friday/Saturday, car will be sitting outside, and driving another hour Christmas morning.

Thoughts?

and you think that's extreme? As long as you have the right tires, it's fine.

I would not consider driving in those temps on stock 1LE tires. Regardless of tracking, traction will be non-existent.

For our area, yes it's extreme.

Did some more research and it sounds like Goodyear Eagle F1 SuperCar 3s will possibly have issues in the scenarios I mentioned. Looks like we're taking the Elantra this weekend...

Bummer.

Yes you definitely do not want to run those tires in those temps.

I didn’t like running the Supercar3 in anything below 60’s due to traction issues. Michelin PS4S are the better option if running in cooler temps and rain.

So, I'm leaving the car here in Atlanta. I live in an apartment and park the car in a parking garage (obviously not heated). Windchill here Saturday morning is supposed to be like -5.

Should I consider going this week to get some winter tires put on? It doesn't get that cold here very often, but I'm fearful these tires sitting idle in the cold may crack. Or do they only crack from flexing while being driven?

They’ll crack from just being in the cold. Put it on jackstands and bring them in to your apartment

I drove my 17 1LE through a Chicago winter. It was no big deal. Take it slow and use snow mode. Mine was manual obv. Easy to second gear start and crawl.

From reading this, it sounds like the tires are only susceptible to cracks if the car is moving. I don't see anything regarding if the car is idle and not being driven.

As an alternative, you could put performance all season tires on your 1 LE from a nearby discount tire since they do touchless mounting. That's what i did and is peace of mind driving in cold temps without thinking about it.

Its the driving part, flexing, that is the real concern though sitting in the cold is of concern, too.

Manual says, not recommended to drive under 40F, says do not drive under 20F. 200 treadwear are soft, they freeze, they crack. Argue away, but swap tires and save the stockers for summer.
