I'll break in my 2020 ZL1 on the recommended Mobil 1 0w40 and PF64. Once I hit 1500 miles, I'm going back to Mobil 1 5w30 (Costco) and PF64 that I used in my C7 Z06. I've got cases of it.

Why? Buy the Kirkland 5W-30 instead as it's cheaper AND it's dexos1 (the Mobil 1 is not dexos1 or dexos2).

Odd, the Mobil 1 full synthetic 5w30 oil cases and containers say it is Dexos2.

That is apparently different than the Mobil 1 that I saw the other day at my local Costco.

That isn't dexos2, though. It's dexos1, Gen2. What looks like a big 2 in that photo is actually just a swirly graphic and there's a very small "1" in the lower right of the image (nice that they make it so confusing).

If that one is dexos1, though, it's on the same level as the Kirkland oil I mentioned.

Me either.
That's the Dexos1 symbol. But, still good to use for street use.

if you dont race your car and your worried about the dexos rating this is the new torco oil they came out with

I thought that was a new age '2'. Thanks for clearing that up.

At least it's Dexos and I won't be taking my car to the track, so I'll use the 5w30 when the 1500 miles comes up. I did change oil at 500 miles and bought the 0w40 from the dealer. The price was a shocker but better than having a high school drop out lube/oil monkey touch the car.

Yeah, the logo leaves a lot to be desired.

This page should show you the logos more clearly, but the simple thing to look for is green (dexos1) or blue (dexos2).

https://www.gmdexos.com/brands/index.html

I changed my oil at about 600 miles with dexos1 Mobil 1 and again at about 1650 miles with dexos1 Kirkland - both 5W-30 as I have no need to be running the thicker oil. While I would love to take the car along some stretches where I could push it a bit more, my driving will never really be more than "somewhat spirited" road driving.

Looking for a little clarification about 15-50w, I understand it's recommended for the zle on track. What would be the downside to running it full time if the cars rarely run in the street? I've heard cat failure? Suppose you run long tubes no cats, or cat deletes, would it matter at that point? As long as you make sure to get oil up to temp before romping it.

Also, if I'm running the 0-40w and needed to add oil but all I could find was 5-30w dexos 1 locally. Would it royally screw something up if I added a little, say maybe half quart?
Not sure about mixing weights like that but its almost time to drop the oil anyways

About your 2nd questions,

Any oil is better than no oil, yes you can top off with 5w30.
Also if your running 0w40 you can run it year round, you do not need to drop weights.

I meant change the oil when I said drop it just to be clear. Ive been running the 0-40w year round. Thanks for the info about adding the 5-30w, puts my mind at ease if I need to add some

For me, the bigger concern would be why you're having to add oil...

15W-50? Is that a typo?

exactly,it's going in for an oil consumption test sad to say. My father-in-law is the parts manager at a gm dealer. He said bring it in, we'll throw in a new engine haha

15w-50 is for track use in the zl1 1le, sorry didn't mean 15-50w

I was more asking about the numbers as opposed to placement of the "W".

Didn't catch that it's the ZL1 1LE the first time through... All of the LT1 motors get 0W-40 dexos2 for track use and I was like

I get it now.
