M6 Shift lever rattle

Hi,

my 2.0 M6 Gear shift lever rattles in certain RPMs while on 2nd, 4th and 6th gear. It stops rattling when I touch the shift knob.
It does not rattle the car is cold and in the morning hours. but when it is hot outside and I drive when the interior is hot, it starts rattling though the car has been parked since morning.

I took it to the dealer today and we were able to reproduce the issue.

The dealer said that they have to remove the console and see if the problem is with the shifter or console plastic due to heat.

Has anybody else faced the same issue?

thoughts please

Thank you

pull the boot up, and tighten the set screw. Watch this video to see how to get to the set screw:

I had a rattle in my shifter also, that was driving me nuts. I popped the center boot up and removed the shift knob and drove it around and no noise.
Yes it may have been the set screw or the plastic clips that hold the knob to the plastic collor that holds the top of the shift boot.
But I changed the knob to a pistol.

I did this; it took 10 minutes and fixed the buzzing problem

did you change the shifter or just the knob.

Is the knob too heavy to pull the shift lever to rattle?

No, there is a set screw which keeps the knob assembly from turning. It can become loose. The knob does not need to be removed, simply back the loose screw out, apply blue thread locker, and tighten. Buzzing gone.

I recently had the same issue in my car, took it to the dealer and they torqued the screw and no problems ever since.

Thank you all for your response.
I tightened the set screw and no issue now.

Re-hashing an old thread! Great forum and wanted to thank everyone for this post...had the same issue on my new leftover '17 and this solution definitely fixed the shifter rattle I had.

Mine rattles too on occasion but doesn’t bother me. I had a few Hurst shifters in my Camaros over the years and they all rattled and buzzed while driving. My 2010 Hurst shifter was real noisy but I got so used to it that I ignored it while driving.

In my experience, on the '16+ SS, the stock and Hurst shifters do not rattle at all. Coming from a 4th gen I was surprised by this.
