5-30 VS 0-40
I have a 2018 camaro with bolt ons and e85. I know before Gm recommended 5-30 but now they're recommending 0-40.
Should I make the switch? I live in california where it's been over 100 degrees |

the 0w40 will be thicker across the entire temp range than the 5w30, the added protection at operating temp is probably worth it if you never need to care about cold temps. Even if you dont track it.
5w40 is most likely just going to waste efficiency by being thicker than necessary when colder than 100c and make it a bit harder to turn over than it should be. As 5w40 is quite a bit more thick than 5w30 at the same temps. Since these are ratios. good breakdown here: https://www.corvetteforum.com/forums...0-vs-0w40.html |

I am running 5W-30 dexos1 oil that I can get at Costco for $25 for two 5qt jugs. Compared to the dexos2 0W-40 I can do four oil changes for the same cost as one. The recommendation was always 5W-30 with a need to move to 0W-40 for track use. GM basically "swapped" and now says to use 0W-40 dexos2 but that 5W-30 dexos1 is fine for street use. If you take your car to a dealership for one of the "included" oil changes, odds are you're getting the 5W-30 dexos1 oil because that's all that GM will reimburse the dealership for. If you happen to get the 0W-40 dexos2, your dealer is kicking in the extra to cover the cost. |

GM always recommended the 5W-30 dexos1 oil. With zero changes to the engine (LT1), they then started recommending 0W-40 dexos2 but stated that 5W-30 dexos1 was perfectly fine for street use. If GM will back the powertrain warranty for a street-driven car using the dexos1 oil, where's the benefit of running the dexos2 stuff? Don't get me wrong - if you don't drive your car a lot and can get away with one oil change per year, the dexos2 stuff definitely won't break the bank. I'm also in the camp of "don't buy a $50,000 car then whine about having to run premium fuel in it." But, the premium fuel is needed for performance and protection of the motor - GM is clearly still telling us that the dexos1 oil is perfectly fine unless you're on the track. |

You can run dexos 2 with low sulfur fuel.
Low sulfur fuel was mandated in 2017. Bingo bango

The initial recommendation may have been due to getting a better deal on bulk purchasing of oil more than anything else. Who knows, except now that 0w40 is recommended for most use for the V8 rather than exceptional use. It wouldn't be the first time GM changed a fluid spec on the 6th gen without changing mechanical parts and without forcing a recall and so warrantying vehicles using either spec while 1 technically being better (atf transmission fluid) |

Dexos1 5W30 oil is fine for everyday. GM wants 40wt and even 50wt oils for the track due to elevated oil temps. If you are tuned pushing more power then run the "Track" oil for the added protection. All oils get thinner with temp, higher viscosity oil will maintain better oil pressure and bearing protection due to being a few points higher at temp. For example |

I fully understand and totally agree that running the engine harder than "street driving" warrants the dexos2 oil. So, track use and mods will benefit.
My point was that there isn't any basis for GM to tell us to run dexos2, only be willing to cover the costs of dexos1 in the included service visits, and also tell us that dexos1 is fine for street use all at the same time. My guess is that the charge came from the lawyers when someone tracked their car with dexos1 and made a stink when something broke. |
