You never want to wait longer than 500 miles on any new engine to do the first change. During break-in there is a good deal of metal debris created as the rings abrade into the shape of the cylinder walls as well as assembly debris present from the engine build. It is almost guaranteed to shorten your engines life by waiting, and as GM has found with so many failed engines, they now recommend the 500 mile change. ALL engines benefit from changing no later than 500 miles.

Check the corvette forums, the only reason a 500mi oil change was recommended was for dry sump engines where extreme high temperatures degraded silicone in the seals which interfered with the antifoaming agents in the oil and caused early failures. If it wasn't for that issue, it would be no different than any other new engine. The 500 mi recommendation has nothing to do with metal particles. Changing oil at 500mi is overkill for most any new engine, including the LT1 (if you aren't tracking). If you are tracking, I would finish out the 1500mi break in, then drain the factory 5w30 and switch to a 0 or 5w-40 dexos2 oil.

Correct, it never had to do with massive engine failures, and had to do with high rev, not high temp. None of this had to do with the Camaro, which is not dry sump. A 500 mile change is in the track manual , not the owners manual, 500 change if you're going to the track.
