SS track day brake rotor heat shield question

With what I have at my disposal right now I can’t get these calipers off, that being said how bad would it be to run a track day with the tire deflectors removed, with the track control arm air guides, but with the street rotor heat shield?

Depends on ambient temp and what pace you run. If it's cooler and you take it easy on stuff you'd probably be OK. If it's hot and you brake really late and are pushing the car hard then you might be risking pad fade or even brake fluid boiling. Not swapping shields doesn't mean you absolutely can't run, though.

If you still plan to run, definitely switch to a higher DOT 4 fluid if you haven't already (Castrol SRF, Motul 660, and Brembo HTC64T are the higher boiling point ones that come to mind) and take it a little slow if you're a seasoned driver that can push the car to it's limits and you should be fine. Can also brake early which still gives you time to slow down before the corners if you're concerned about overheating as well. Can even bring parts with you and possibly swap at the track if you can find someone that'll let you borrow the tools that you need, it's a pretty quick job that can be done before starting or by skipping a session.

Guys I was able to get the calipers off and swap to the track brake shields. They probably helped a lot but it still only took 4-5 laps to get them really hot, even in the rain.

The car has DOT4 motul 600 fluid in it

are you on stock pads and lines? before i swapped over to the zzp bbk kit i had motul 660 fluid stainless steel lines and powerstop track day pads and i never had any problems with overheating just wanted a better/bigger setup

Stock everything besides Motul 660 fluid and the SS track air config

Maybe the heavier 1le size wheels and tires are harder on these smaller SS brakes

I’ll def give a setup like that a try tho before I upgrade to something bigger

What's you definition of "really hot?" Your brakes are always going to get hot on the track, even in the rain, but it really isn't an issue unless you're getting so much fade that you can't get into ABS anymore or get close to boiling fluid. Also, if the extra heat is from wheels/tires, it's probably more to do with being able to carry more speed than it is the slightly extra mass

If you are getting into that, then yeah a bigger set of brakes would be the next best step to take.

Nice vid. And nice wheeling of that Legends car

What do you mean by getting them hot? Long pedal? Pad fade? Smoking wheels? Just curious.
PS No idea what pad an SS comes with (vs SS 1LE).
My stock brakes take whatever i throw at them.
Cheers!

Thank you!

Lap 4 they smelt like they were starting to burn up and there was blue/gray smoke behind me but I was thinking maybe its just because the brakes have never got that hot before, bc on the 2nd run it didnt happen

Pedal never got long but I kept the stints really short

Regular SS comes with some 4 pistons that look like theyre more brembo licensing than actual brembos, and not sure on the pads. I want the 6 piston brake upgrade so bad lol. - it def stops, but the heat management would be much better with bigger rotors like a 1le

Assuming you bedded the pads in, smoke DURING a stint seems vert weird. Then again, i am not familiar with a non 1LE SS at all.

Agree, cant go wrong with a six pot set up. Cheers!

Not sure what wheels you are running, but i weighed my MRR setup with G3s and they were lighter than the stock SS wheels with runflats.

Also agree that you can't go wrong upgrading to 6-piston setup. I'd search for a used set before buying the GM kit or the ZZP kit. You might even find a good deal on ZL1 brakes.

These are stock brakes so the dealer would have bedded them if they did or didnt I dont know, but they've never gotten as hot on the street as they did on the track I was thinking that could have been it but I have no clue haha

Ok, mine are the SS1LE reps so yours could be slightly different, but I doubt they are heavier than stock.
