Thinking of going from 5th gen Zl1 to 6th gen SS

So I’m really liking these Pray Performance 6th gens. I’m thinking of going to a 6th gen SS from a modded 5th gen Zl1. The thing is I’m at 627hp without cam now but the lighter weight and direct injection is really tempting. The 5th gen is getting closer and closer to being payed off and mods are a lot cheaper than an LT1 platform. Is it worth it?

The Alpha platform is amazing, I would certainly jump to a 6th Gen...

I have a 6th gen SS, but at your power level, you will not be completely satisfied with anything less than a supercharged SS or a ZL1.

The 6th gen is absolutely amazing, the Alpha chassis and the suspension will indeed blow you away, but the 6th gen SS has 455 crank hp that translates to "only" 390-420 rwhp, it will probably feel lackluster up top coming from a 620+ hp car. I'm not an expert on LT1/LT4 mods, but given their relative recency and increased complexity compared to the LSx, I'm sure they are still more expensive to mod overall.

I can’t afford a 6th gen Zl1 so my plan was to upgrade a 6th gen SS but the mods aren’t cheap for the LT1 right? I mean to go with a Pray set up I would need heads and cam intake. After caming my 5 th gen I’d be at 700 ish hp but its a heavier car though. And I also hear that LT1 stock internals are only good up to a certain HP correct ?

I would keep the 5th gen ZL1 and do more mods to it!

OP I have owned 3 5th gens, including a M6 ZL1. I would say a 6th gen SS or LT1 is a 6th gen sweet spot. If you plan to track a 6th gen SS is a good plan. If not then consider an LT1. I have also owned a 6th gen A10 ZL1. While very cool I found it a bit too much on the street. But awesome on a race track.

The LT1 powered CA6 Camaro is one of the best choices on the planet.

I’d say keep your ZL1.

Keep the '13 ZL1 for your therapy machine. Purchase a new LT1 model for your DD. Dilemma solved.

I would keep your fifth-generation ZL1. Make no mistake, the Alpha platform is far superior to the Zeta platform. The sixth-generation Camaro's interior design and interior materials are vastly superior, too. However, if I had to do it all over again, I would purchase a fifth-generation ZL1 instead of my current sixth-generation 1LE. At 6'4" tall, I find the previous generation to be much more comfortable and practical.

Is it worth it? Well I’ve owned a 2010 SS and drove a stock GEN5 ZL1 and I can tell you first hand there is no comparison, the GEN6 is awesome. The GEN6 SS felt as good or better than my C5 Corvette in handling. The GEN5 platform was just too heavy. The current SS has better performance specs than your ZL1 in stock comparisons.

Now with that all beings said... What makes you happy? No one on the forum can sway what puts a smile on your face and makes you happy. Drive both then you will have to make that decision.

Keep us posted on your choice.

Same here. I went from a modded 2013 C6 to a new C7 with many problems and was not happy at all. Going down on power is not easy.

I had considered doing the opposite and going to a 5th Gen ZL1 Convertible. But that thought was somewhat short lived.

The 6th Gen Alpha platform is really good. As I understand it, it's pretty much plug and play to put a supercharger on the LT1 engine aside for the tune of course.

The other thing that would go through my mind would be if I were looking for an auto, then I would want the A10, which wasn't in the SS until 2019. It was in the ZL1 in 2017. Now, I drive a manual, and that's good for me, but that A10 is pretty damn good. Given the relative price difference between a 2019 2SS and 2017 ZL1, eh, I'd probably hold out for the ZL1.

How far off are you money wise to being able to swing a ZL1? It doesn’t have to be new, & if big mods that will require a trans tune are in the cards a ‘19- older is the better choice.
