It’s not mid engine. Not even a true front mid engine where the entire engine block is at or behind the front axles (e.g. C7). Wish Ford had made that change. If I remember my Mustang engine placement correctly, the front of the block was about 4 inches in front of the axles but the massive heads were 6-7” ahead of the axles. I think my ZL1 is about 3.5” ahead of the axles and no massive head overhanging above, so slightly better.

The new Mustang GTD is awesome; I’m super stoked Ford partnered with Multi-magic to engineer and design a street legal race car.
800+ hp predator, yes please CF body, yes Magnesium wheels, yes Titanium exhaust? Yes. Transaxle? Yes. Active aero and DRS? Yes. That said, I think a ZL1 1LE with revised aero for more downforce and active aero with DRS and the ZR-1’s LT5 would be nearly if not just as quick around a track for 40% of the price. They wouldn’t even have to do all those other exotic materials because it’s already a much lighter car than the Mustang. We can wish.

It's still only a Mustang, enough said. $300K... complete insanity.

Here's the most recent review from the guys over at Throttle House:
https://youtu.be/2mq7gj1bHys Both the dig and rolling drag races go as one would expect. The time around the track was "Sooo, much better than the GT." but it still needs to be "wrestled with." as the steering feel still isn't as good as the Camaro's. The time it ended up with is properly fast, after a bit of "manhandling" of course. Bonus lap-time from the Mach 1 included was nice to see.

I saw the GTD at the LA auto show. It’s not just a Mustang, and I’m no Mustang fan, but that chassis is epic. Every part of that car is one off. No 1LE, no matter how much cash you sink into it will be on par with that race car.
On another note, I was driving to the house the other night waiting at the light and I looked across the street. I had a 3/4 view of what I was certain was a black ZL-1. My view was partially blocked as it made a right turn. As it goes down the street I was blown away as I saw the taillights! Wow can’t believe how closely it resembles the 6th gen Camaro, especially in black. |

2024 Lightning Lap results are in : 2:51.2
"As fans of lightweight things, we looked like cartoon characters with eyeballs popping out of their skulls when the Ford Mustang Dark Horse rolled onto the scales. Weighing in at 4024 pounds—just 43 fewer than the 2020 Mustang Shelby GT500—the Dark Horse has spent too much time grazing." "The Dark Horse's biggest letdown is its 10-speed automatic. It doesn't take many laps before the gauge warns of rising fluid temperatures. And with the heat come gear indecisiveness and untimely downshifts. It's very likely the six-speed manual could knock a little time off. Nevertheless, the Dark Horse's 2:51.2 lap is good enough to dethrone the Mach 1 to become the new king of the LL2 segment."
