What type of finish on SS 1LE wheels
Long story short I messed up one of my rear wheels doing something stupid. I figured out what the paint code is for the wheel but I wasn’t sure what kind of finish is on the wheels?
I’m taking the wheel in to get sanded and repainted but I wasn’t sure if the wheels have regular wheel clear coat in them or if they have a Matte clear coat/finish applied to them? Does anyone know what kind of finish is applied to the wheels after they get painted?

I believe they are Matte or a "Satin" type finish. They are for sure not gloss or flat. A good shop should be able to adjust the finish to match the other wheels.

Thank you. Yep the shop owner and I thought they were a satin/matte type of finish. Just was looking for confirmation that it wasn’t clear coat.

There was a thread here some time ago where someone posted the actual paint code for 1LE wheels. I can't seem to find it, but it exists!

WA784U is as close a match any one has found. I used it a few times and was happy with the match.
I had a 1LE for years and I'd be hard pressed to be convinced of anything but a gloss clear coat. |

OP says he already knows the base paint code (784U Satin Graphite Metallic). The finish itself looks like satin clearcoat to me, similar to this, but it could be a single stage paint, too, a bit hard to tell. I have a touch-up pen in this color and it does not dry to the exact same sheen.

I recently repaired the wheel from my car that was damaged in the accident I was involved in back in March. Insurance paid to replace the wheel with a new one, but I wanted to keep the old one and fix it so I would have a spare. I purchased a spray can of Satin Graphite Metallic paint, which appears to be really close to the OEM color of the wheels. However, it also has a bit more metallic flake in it and it lays down more matte than the wheels. So after I painted the wheel I put a couple of coats of gloss clearcoat on the wheel and it turned out really close to the OEM finish. If I had some satin clearcoat I would have probably used it instead In my opinion small touchups are fine just using the Satin Graphite Metallic paint, but a larger area probably needs some clear to make the paint look more like OEM. Here are pictures of the wheel I repaired. I think it turned out pretty good.

Yeah, so look at the picture below I just took, you can see the ton of metallic in the paint, which my touch-up stick matches perfectly, but there is a sheen on top that I'm leaning towards coming from satin clear coat. That's what I would do if I messed up my wheel, spray paint with clear coat, just like ZPirate did, but I'd use the satin 2K clear. Someone here sanded down their ZL1 carbon fiber dash panel with 600 grit, then re-cleared it with satin, and it came out better than stock, not as glossy and very high end.
