Extended Warranty

Has anyone bought the extended warranty for their car? Whats the cost? Coverage? My 3 year bumper to bumper is expiring soon.

Keep in mind that extended warranties are not from the factory or dealer but 3rd party provider. Cost and coverage can be all over the map.

I've owned A LOT of cars in my life and only got an extended warranty once. That car got totaled after less than a year and I had a devil of a time getting a refund and they prorated it. Gave me some BS song and dance that it ran concurrently with the factory one.

I would only recommend it if you are mechanically clueless or have a legitimate concern about the future of the car.

I received a 72 month, 75,000 mile GM extended warranty for my trouble when I had a full engine replacement under warranty. The retail value of that is about $2800. You can negotiate a lower price.

If you want the GM extended warranty, you'll want to make sure it's a GMEPP (protection plan). This plan goes into the GM system and can be accessed by the dealer using your VIN. Your dealer can give you prices or you can shop around. I bought mine from a dealer in Michigan. They offered a way better price than my local dealer.

How many miles and years did you extend to? What was the cost? Do you have a phone number for that dealer?

Dennis Fitchner at Minholt Chevrolet sells GMEPP at a very reduced cost. Mine cost me $1400 6/72 with $0 deductible but that was back in 2017.

I just used the website to start the process and then reached out after I got an email from them. Phone number is on the website I posted above. I did 6 years, 48,000 miles with $0 deductible. Original cost was $1,250, but they knocked $200 off because I bought at the end of the month.

Well the advice I can give you is not to. I dont think they are a waste of money, but the gamble you run by not getting one is will you incur a expense that is equal or greater to the amount you pay for the warranty.

When I was younger and buying my first new vehicle I came to this point in the process where the dealer was asking me about a warranty (this was 25 years ago). I was fortunate enough that my brother in law was / is the owner of the dealership, so he was sitting with me when they asked. So I asked him what to do - and this is the way he worded it "all you are doing is pre-paying for a repair you might have. If you sit on the money, and get to the mileage that the warranty was written for, and you didn't use it, you are farther ahead. If you buy the warranty now, you might never use it and will be out the money. You only win with it if you have MORE problems with the car than what you initially paid for the extended warranty"

I have never bought any kind of extended warranty since - and have never needed one.

IMO cars with issues will show those issues by the time the factory warranty is up. These things rarely pan out, and it seems to me that those I know who have bought one then tried to use it end up having to arm wrestle the warranty companies that are trying to wiggle out of not paying. If you sit on your money, you can at least spend it at your discretion.

Make sure you get it before your factory bumper to bumper is up! You will even get some gm reward points.

I'm with the "save that money" crowd . Never been a fan of extended warrantees.. especially 3rd party. the mouseprint in the contract usually has a ton of exclusions and just like insurance companies they always try to find a way out of paying.

Not sure of the GM plan or if they even offer an extended "bumper to bumper" but i imagine the stuff that might actually cause future issues (electronics and wiring) will not be covered

I generally don't keep cars past the original warranty period, but I did purchase extended warranties for two of the more than 60 cars I've owned - one for my C6, which was a "keep forever, low-mileage" car and one for my son's drive-to-school car, which is now 11 years old. The extended warranties were the OEM bumper-to-bumper type, not the "drivetrain only" third-party insurance policies with lots of restrictions and high deductibles.

Both warranties were around $800, which is small money if you need to replace anything connected to a computer in your car. (Even the HVAC control unit for a C6 is $1200...) If you plan on keeping a car a long time, consider the large one-time cost for the extended warranty now against the big bill you'll be avoiding in several years; otherwise, I'd say forget it.

BTW, Fichtner is the best - less than half what the local dealer wanted.
