Cost of replacement key?
I have lost my key for my car. I do have a second one but does anyone have an estimate on the price to get another key made.

go to your dealer....if you kept the little tag that came on your keys, bring it with you. I believe the cost of the key is about $40

I was told by the dealer that if I lost one it would be $400 to replace it.

The keys themselves are cheap on Ebay but dont know what it costs to program them. It says which is common to any new keys like these you will have to get all of the keys you have programmed again at the same time.

$31.20 from www.gmpartsdirect.com of course you will have to get the remote programmed and key cut at the dealership.
This is for a non remote start key, I don;t have the part number for one with remote start.

yeah and if you buy one off ebay, and it was previously cut, its TOTALLY WORTHLESS to you. which all that I saw were. Just beware what you are buying.

Any GM dealer can order you a replacement key either as a "blank, uncut" or "pre-cut" by GM to your vehicle. The equipment to cut these keys is VERY EXPENSIVE, and many dealers have not purchased this equipment, this is why the key can be ordered as pre-cut.
Now there are variables as far as pricing. 1. There is a $20.00 price difference if a key is ordered pre-cut, don't quote me, but I seem to recall $45.00 blank vs $65.00 cut. 2. If you have lost all your keys, and keytag #, your dealer may charge you a "look-up Fee" for obtaining the key code from GM of $25-$50.00 (there are STRICT guidelines a dealer must go by, including filing a copy of your license & registration for security reasons) Onto programming. 1. If you have a working key, you can do this yourself. Simply insert a "learned, working key", turn the ignition to "run", but don't crank the engine, then off & remove the key. Next, within 5 seconds insert the new, unprogrammed key & turn it to run. your new key should now operate and the keyless entry code will be learned as well. 2. If you have lost all your keys, your car will have to be towed to your dealer where they will have to download a file from GM to erase all "learned keys" from the vehicle & program any "new" keys. This procedure does take some time, and your dealer will likely charge 1 hour shop labor rate. **Edit... Blank, uncut key list price is $35.00 Pre-cut key list price is $55.00 As a side note, you can have up to 10 keys programmed to one vehicle (although I wouldn't want that many floating around to my baby ) Last edited by R6P; 02-01-2010 at 06:40 AM. |

Yeah should have had a tag on it with the vin number, and if I recall correctly like a barcode.
