You need to measure for correct pushrod length.

Take it from me, whether you're doing the install or somebody else is, MAKE SURE pushrod length is actually measured and verified before ordering. Incorrect pushrod length will fail lifters and damage your valve covers. It costs around $20 for an adjustable pushrod in order for you to measure. Spend the money and spend the time doing it. This is valuable knowledge.

Purchase COMP Cams 7901-1 Magnum Pushrod Length Checker 7.500" to 8.700"
Turn the tool all the way in and double check the measurement (this can sometimes be 0.025 off... so it's a good idea to check. For simplicity, we will assume it checked out to be 7.00" here) Each full rotation is roughly 0.05". A good starting number is 7.7 (so 7.7 - 7.500 = 0.2. 0.20 / 0.050 (length per turn) = 4 rotations. So fully compress it and lengthen it 4 full rotations Put the tool into the motor, put the rocker arms down, and torque to spec. Make sure the cam is on it's base circle. So what we are now looking for is making it the appropriate length. If you can tap the tip of the rocker on the valve stem, the pushrod is too short. if it is applying pressure, it is too long. If it's one of those two, take the rocker off, adjust the tool half a turn (0.025) in the appropriate direction, and check again. So lets say that you go through that process and you ended up having to extend it 3 full rotations. So we were at 7.700" + 3 full rotations. Each rotation is 0.050", so we extended the pushrod 3 * 0.050"... or 0.150". So we are now at 7.850" total length But wait... there's more!! if you are running a hydraulic lifter, you want to preload the lifter plunger. The Johnson 2110 lifter requires 0.035" pre-load +/- 0.010" so we will take our measured length of 7.850" and add the pre-load of 0.035". So we are now at a desired pushrod length of 7.885 +/- 0.10" or in other words 7.875 - 7.895 Disclaimer: MEASURE IT YOURSELF, THOSE MEASUREMENTS ARE FOR DEMONSTRATION PURPOSES ONLY. THEY ARE NO WHERE NEAR ACCURATE. IF YOU USE THEM, WITHOUT MEASURING YOURSELF, YOUR WILL PERMANENTLY DO VERY EXPENSIVE DAMAGES TO YOUR ENGINE.

Steel pushrods expand less than aluminum heads and aluminum block. You lose roughly 0.010 amount if pre-load warmed up... that's why the instructions are for a cold pre-load. Johnson does the math for you by telling you 0.035 pre-load.

OP, you're asking what we got.. you will need to measure YOUR pushrod length. Some guy across the country with a different cam and lifters will NOT have the same measurement as you. You're saying you got 7.90 right? That's your pushrod length then. Did you make sure to account for preload? Watch a youtube video. Search "how to measure for proper pushrod length" if you see a Katech video, that one has a great explanation. Measure again once you fully understand the process. Then measure a 3rd and 4th time to be sure. This is a very important part of the process. Take pics and videos of you measuring yourself if you'd like. We will be happy to help. But listen to what all these guys are telling you first. |
