Thinking of ordering 23 ZL1, Carbon Fiber Hood Insert

Wanted to ask those with ZL1’s, I’m thinking about ordering a 2023 ZL1 what I would like to know is the Carbon Fiber Hood Insert a must have item? I only ask because I had looked at an 2018 ZL1 that had the Carbon Fiber insert and with 38k on it the insert was scratched up a little bit and the edge of the insert at the cowl seemed to be scuffed and damaged a little bit.

It is a must have item for me when I order. Looks awesome, and priced very fair. It will last as long as it is taken care of, some dont take care of their stuff.

A must have item is subjective to your own taste really. It certainly is not a must have item for me personally, but some people will say absolutely it is. That would be your decision per what you personally like.

I like it, I sought it out since I bought one second hand, wanted the one on the dash as well. Both are purely cosmetic choices honestly.

I just think it looks nice particularly on a black car cause it stands out where the standard one would just blend in.

I don't think the CF hood insert is any less durable than the rest of GM's paint & clear coat. It's exposed carbon fiber topped with clear, probably the same thickness of clear as they put over painted surfaces.

So I'd say get the CF hood insert if you want it -- don't shy away from it believing it is less durable or will end up damaged compared to the painted hood insert.

It's a very nice addition to the car. The scuffs at the cowl edge are due to raising the hood with the wipers extended outward. Don't do that.

I like mine on my 2017 ZL1. It was ordered on the car when new and it was a plus for me when looking for a used ZL1. Get it on the car is my idea!

My 5th Gen ZL1 had the painted hood insert. I made the exposed CF insert a requirement on my 6th Gen ZL1. It gives the car a touch of elegance over the painted insert. I believe it was a very reasonable $650 upgrade for the 2017 model year.

My CF insert is covered in paint protection film and looks as good now as the day I bought the car.

I read it has a thin layer of clearcoat which tends to run off after a couple years leaving it exposed. Maybe someone on here knows more about that.

I dont think the exposed CF hood is a must at all. All the rest of the accent parts on the outside are all Mosaic black like the splitter, side skirts and the rear valance. Getting the hood insert CF makes it look out of place. Furthermore the black one is still CF, just not exposed CF.

When I got my Shock ZL1, I was bummed at first when it didnt have it. But seeing the total package with it black and matching the rest, I think its a no brainer to get it black and not pay extra for the oddball CF part UNLESS you plan to swap out the rest of the parts for CF pieces which people do.

Here's mine with the all black insert. Again remember the exposed CF one is the same as the painted one. Both are CF.
