A few years ago my dad gave my son his '01 GMC Sierra C3 truck. My gf always thought it stunk when she rode in it, I thought it smelled fine.
Ended up finding a decomposed rat in the cabin filter.

I was in this exact situation this year. Pulled my 16 SS out of hibernation in April. Every time I put the AC on I was met with horrible smell that wasn’t the “death” stench. Tried the Lysol trick thinking it was a mildew issue. That was a fail. Did some research and came across this exact thread.
I took my cabin air filter out and found a mouse had formerly made a nest in the filter. I also found all the extra napkins from Dunkin’ Donuts that had disappeared from my glove box lol. I found the fan housing was full of materials which I used a vacuum to get rid of. I utilized a bore scope and was able to confirm I got all the stuffing/material out from the fan housing. I replaced the cabin air filter with a K&N so hopefully the metal pleats and oiling will dissuade them from chewing it or deciding to make it their home. I did find that by leaving the AC in the on position when the car is shut off keeps the diverter door in the dash in the down position effectively cutting off access from the outside cowl vent. So far, so good.

Did you removed the dashboard for cleaning fan housing? Because there is no way reach the fan with vaccum (at least the one I've got in place).

I did not have to. Just removing the cabin air filter and running the fan pushed all the light fluff up to a point where I was able to get to it with a small shop vac attachment. Luckily, I did not have any dead animals at the bottom of the fan housing. That would have been a whole different logistical nightmare.

I had a mouse get under the hood of my 2011 Camaro SS and chew up the foam around the air intake by the radiator. I installed about 3 electronic mouse devices and I've never had an issue since. I know some say they dont work but my in-laws live in the country and they swear by them. I've been mouse free for 4 years now so I can't complain.

Just found this thread and there are some great ideas I need to try... Perhaps a thorough cleaning and screen over the air inlet will dissuade them.
I've now replaced three cabin air filters with just over 11K miles on my Camaro. I've placed traps, dispersed mothballs, peppermint spray and these damn country mice still keep coming.
