Recommendations for head/cam package for L99

At this point I am really considering doing a cam/head package. I have a L99 so I have to take the heads off, and while I am at it I might as well just upgrade the heads to something better. For now the car is a DD so I would like a package that could support DD usage and be reliable. If there are any heads that are completely assembled so I don't have to deal with installing the valve train that would be a big plus. I'd eventually have to get a TC as well but I don't know if that needs to be done before or after the cam, and if I can wait on the TC, like if driving the cammed car be horrible without one.

So what complete kits do you guys recommend? Not waiting to have to worry about piecing something together since I am not an expert, but will do the install.

If you get a mild cam, you don't need a converter. If you get any bigger than a Stage 2, you really need one to deal with cam surge and bucking at idle. You can get a converter even if you don't have an aftermarket cam, but the best thing to do is either do gears only, or a cam with a matching converter at the same time, or just do all 3 all at once like I did.

As for recommendations, GPI has complete kits. They have their Stage 1-4 kits, as well as a max package, all the way up to LLSR

Yeah I mean if I am going to buy something I may as well go big and not just a stage 1 cam. I'd at least go stage 2 as I want that nice lopey sound. So with that said I understand I will need a TC but if I don't have one installed right away will I be able to drive the car in a normal way, minus the bucking at idle, which I could just press the brake harder or take it out of drive.

I already have 3.91 rear diff and other bolt ons installed.

I'll check out GPI. Also any pros or cons for vvt?

I am an LS3, but I am super happy with my TSP state 3 cam/ported heads package. Was easy to get everything from one place, and they are super helpful people whenever I have a question. I wasn't building off price alone, but they used to have a discounted package when getting a cam kit and head porting at the same time..made them very friendly on the wallet. I would give them a shout and explain what you wish to do, and they would get you going in the right direction!

I had similiar thinking about upgrading the heads. I went with the GMPP CNC'd heads. I think they may be the least expensive LS3 CNC'd head. I got them from BTR so they even installed their spring kit for me, ready to go out of the box.

You can definitely spend a lot of money and get some beautiful LS3 CNC'd/aftermarket casting heads. For a mild street build you may not see much more performance compared to the stock LS3 head since they already flow very well.

One really nice thing about the aftermarket castings is you can get more piston to valve clearance due to better valve angle. A cam with overlap will bleed off compression. If you can it's good to bump up the compression ratio with a smaller chamber. After market heads let you do that more easily and still have good clearance.

Went with ported LS3 heads, Johnson lifters, TX Speed Cam & Headers, Borla atak full exhaust, Fast 102 intake & 102 TB, Circle D 4000 stall. Made 460 whp with Matt (sorian tuning) on his mustang dyno.

OP, KEEP VVT!



Honestly, even the smallest cam from GPI is gonna net you probably 70 hp, which isn't bad at all. If you are gonna do it, make sure to also grab an underdrive pulley and GPI's ported/rod modded intake manifold. The manifold will grab you 10-15 rwhp and should compliment those ported heads well.

Different Dynos so take it for what’s its worth. Tap vvt2 (original not updated version) to a ss4 flycut picked up 20rwhp. I also added a rod mod, udp, 3.91s, and bigger TC at same time which all effect Dyno numbers to some extent. If I was going to do it once and it’s a DD I’d just pick a stage 3 from any of the major players.
