ZL1 VS. Z06 ($20,000) difference

The New ZL1 is one hell of a car, and comparing a base ZL1 Manual and a base Z06 Manual OTD, is about $20,000 different.

a) Do you get a ZL1 that has $20,000 less features?
b) Does GM charge a lot more for a Z06, than what it really is? "Corvette Tax"?
c) Or is it simply the pricing structure for "Corvette" VS. "Camaro" category?

They are two very different cars in terms of driving characteristics, design, and platform/chassis. Do not confuse the ZL1 as a larger Corvette that is "cheaper".

You really only needed one thread...

Why would a Z06 owner buy a new ZL1?

I've seen some folks that actually own a new model of Z06 and yet buying or bought the new ZL1? Why?

What does the new ZL1 give you that you spend another $62,000+ and buy a similar car?
I ask this question from these folks with both cars, Why should one buy a Z06 against ZL1 or Buy a ZL1 against Z06?

Thanks!

Because they already own a z06 and they want a second cool car.

And yes, the z06 is 20k better/cooler.

I have a C7 Z51 and am interested in a Gen ZL1.

Because I can afford it and would rather have a new LT4 650 HP Camaro than a used 350 HP Porsche 911?

GM offers some insane value in the entry supercar level performance.

Ok - I am going to assume the OP had a serious question, which is "Why does a Z06 cost more than a ZL1 when they basically have the same components"

So the answer is pretty simple. The Camaro is a mass market car that leverages it's costs across many more units in I4, V6 and V8 forms than the Corvette does (Corvette is only about 35,000 units a year)

GM also leverage economies of scale from the Camaro chassis in other parts of their portfolio - namely that the same chassis is used in the new Cadillac range. So GM gets a lot better cost recovery from the development costs on a Camaro than it does on a Corvette. It also gets a much better economy of scale in the manufacturing process to reduce component costs.

The reality is that the ZL1 is (subjectively) 90% as good as a Z06 but only costs 75% as much. But the bespoke, low volume parts on the Z06 including the chassis, bodywork and all of it's interior are much more expensive to produce which justifies the much higher price for the Z06

I do not know this for fact, but it wouldn't surprise me to find out that the leverage that GM will get from the new Camaro chassis will allow them to make more profit per unit from a Zl1 than they do from a Z06

Mark
