Scratches on Carbon Fiber Wing/Hood
I figured I would ask to see if I can get someone past experience to info my actions. I am decent at detailing my cars and able to remove swirl marks and light scratches. However, i was not able to remove some scratches on the ZLE carbon fiber wing and hood? Is there some sort of difference on the carbon fiber? Is that clear coat harder? This is my first time dealing with carbon fiber? I was able to remove all swirl marks from the carbon fiber but not those other straight scratches.
I cannot feel them if I swipe my fingers over but I can see them at certain angle and with certain lighting. Any suggestions on how to deal with those? I used an orange pad with M105 followed by a white pad with M205.

im no expert but if its real carbon fiber then its not clear coated. it should be UV resistant epoxy resin that i imagine will be way harder than clear coat. ive seen people fix carbon parts on motorcycle forums? not sure what they use though.

the clearcoat on carbon fiber parts usually isnt as good as automotive paint clearcoat
but you should still be able to clay and wax and polish it

Ive wondered if the visbile carbon fiber hood ZL1 is not a wrap or is real CF? I thought about how I'd go about this sort of detail like the OP is working with whenever I can get my Z.

OP: IIRC, the clearcoat on the CF hood heat extractor insert is a bit softer and thicker than traditional automotive paint clearcoat. The ultimate solution (after fixing any cosmetic defects) is to get some PPF on top of the insert. Have the installer remove the emblems (after making a template for reinstall) and take the CF insert off the car. Have them oversize the patterns to tuck all the edges so there are no visible seams. Going with a PPF that has high clarity and low orange peel (like Suntek Ultra) will add some depth and not obscure any of that brilliant gloss from the CF. |

I polished a buddies CF with the 3 step Jax Wax Polish and my Rupes....it polished perfectly, then he went and got PPF and it coated.
This is mine that was polished, PPF covered, and coated after delivery. Mine has Xpel...(the orange peel is horrendous..LOL!) I left the badge on in case I had to remove PPF...and it still wins awards at shows! |

This is what I have used on mine, followed by polish, followed wax.

Thank you for the feedback. Yeah I can say that my hood insert already has a bunch of light scratches on it again. So i guess the PPF is the way to go to protect that thing. I have barely watched the car 3 times since detailing.
