LT1 Phaser Repair

Putting in my phaser lockout this evening and of course it slipped out of the vise at the wrong time onto my bench

So where it sits is that the spring did not get unwound, as I still had the bolt in that engaged the end of the spring. However I didn’t have any of the other bolts in at the time, so the spring now sits inboard of the “pivot bolt”

Anyone know of a procedure to rewind it if I take the last bolt out, or just order a phaser?

I’m putting in a lockout, not a limiter, would it work if I put the lockout in and ran it as is? FYI it is the Comp lockout (the one with the setscrew that wedges itself in)

good thing Klingons did not show up when your phaser was broke... could have turned out bad.

As long as it doesn't unwind you're okay. If it unwinds order a new one.

I got mine pretty tight in the vise after I saw what happend to yours. Glad you got it back together. I figured as long as I am clamping on the hardened sprocket with a good rag around it, it should be ok to clamp pretty hard.

Well full disclosure, in order for me to get it all back together right, I had to "unwind" it. It only had about 3/4 of a turn of pressure on it.

I unwound it, took the bolt out that was locked onto the end of the spring, shifted the spring to the side so that the "pivot bolt" would go inboard of the first coil of the spring, snugged up the pivot bolt, wound the spring far enough to put the bolt in that held the hook.

It all fell together after that following the instructions on the Lockout

Sounds like you should be okay. It's when you take the pin out when you take the pivot screw out altogether. You'll hear it unwind. That's bad news.

Well just out of curiosity - being it is actually a zero degree lockout - the spring is no longer doing anything correct? The insert had zero clearance on either side of it, and the "vane" was bottomed out.

Radially I dont think it can move anymore.

Why someone hasn't made a gear assembly that will bolt to a standard GenV cam and use the stock cover is beyond me *shrug*

I think there is no movement with a complete lock, the spring is still being used just to absorb any slack IMO. I'd not worry about it. I had a 22 degree restrictor and now full lock. to be honest I felt like just bolting it together solid and save some time and money.

In my next life I'm going for a 3 bolt timing gear solid with new front housing and cam made for it.
