Extended Warranty....

Hey everyone I have a 2020 ZL1 and have been debating purchasing any extended GM bumper to bumper warranty. When does the warranty kick in? When my current B2B expires? Or from the day of purchase? As in the day i purchased the car or the day i purchased the actually warranty? Thanks for any help!

IMHO.....extended warranties are worthless, unless you are hanging onto the car longer than the factory warranty, which I don't. Once the warranty is up, car gets replaced!

And yes, they start the day you purchase the warranty. Don't let anyone tell you any different, namely a dealer.

Typical B2B is 3yr/36000 from date of first purchase. Powertrain is 5yr/60k so you're good through 2023/2025 depending on when the car was first sold.

My understanding is that extended warranties kick in when the factory warranties are gone. It would make sense if they did since you would have B2B for 3 years years or 36,000 miles and the drivetrain warranty for 5 years or 60,000 miles.

The extended warranty needs to be bought before the 3yr/36k bumper to bumper ends. You can still get it but it will be super high price wise. It starts the day you purchase it to the miles you took for the term and years. Your 3yr/36k and 5yr/60k is still intact. I've been researching cause I'm going to get a plan for my girlfriend's 2ss next year.

So the extended warranty will start on the day i purchase, and i probably should get it towards the end of the 3/36 if i decide to go with one?

Yes, but the price of an extended warranty goes up as your miles and months on the b2b warranty go up. In my price/time curve calculations the best time to buy is around 19 months in (before 24 months) and before 12k miles. At this time get a 8yrs/56k or 8/72k mile plan, so effective u will get 7yrs of coverage.

I used to think extended warranties were a rip-off until my wife and I bought a 2014 GMC Acadia SUV. We got talked into buying a six year, 60,000 mile extended B2B warranty. I can’t remember the exact cost, but it was somewhere shy of $2K.

Turns out the Acadia had three major repairs exceeding $1000 each after the original GM B2B warranty expired. All three were covered by the extended warranty and didn’t cost us a dime out-of-pocket. Changed my mind on extended warranties.

OEM Extended Warranties typically begin on the same date as the Factory Warranties. So if the Factory Warranties was for three years and the Extended Warranty was for six years, you would have an additional three years.

In addition to coverage for catastrophic items on a non-–modded car, an Extended Warranty can be helpful in selling a car to a private party.

Modifications such as ECU tunes can of course void either the Factory Warranty or an Extended Warranty.

Not true. extended warranties generally start when bought and add miles to current miles when bought. So unless you are buying the extended warranty on the same date as the car - the statement will not be true.

I purchased my platinum plan through a chevy dealer with 3600 miles on my car and a full year still remaining, it was a 48K miles and 4 year plan that started the day I purchased the plan so I only net 3 years of bumper to bumper and its good to 51.6K miles. the only reason I did it because it was pretty cheap for the extra coverage. Under $600 If you don't buy the extended warranty with the original purchase the platinum plan is about as good as it gets. Its not a true bumper to bumper but pretty close.

Yes, the warranty starts the day you purchase. The more miles you have on the car at the time, the higher the cost of the warranty. The older the car gets, the higher the cost of the warranty, etc.

Also keep in mind warranties are a negotiable item, you don't have to accept the first offered price.

Cars these days have a ton of tech that i would not want to pay to repair. My Grand Cherokee has every piece of tech I can think of except massaging seats. If I keep the car past the lease, I will buy a warranty to go beyond the factory warranty. I am pretty sure one repair on the air-ride and the warranty will pay for itself.

I had an extended warranty via Chevy for my 12 ZL1. Paid $2k ish. Car ran out of factory powertrain warranty and then...

Issues cropped up. $16k in repairs (full exhaust system replaced due to cracking/issues, supercharger replacement due to bearing issues in the snout and a head gasket failure). Car was bone stock, unmodded. Didnt pay a dime out of pocket besides the warranty.

Does anyone know how to contact Dennis Fichtner? He was the best at GMPP and GMEPP warranties, but seems to have changed companies within the last couple of months.
