HUD tach

Is the resolution and responsiveness of the HUD tach good enough to use at the track (primarily drag strip) to determine when to shift, or do you still need to reference the regular tach? I have a non-1LE 1SS and just wondering what I'm missing and if it's good enough to be a substitute for a high mounted tach.

The HUD has built in shift lights.
The HUD tach, while not as precise as the dash, mirrors the readout.
It's the scale on the HUD that is not as large as the dash, and one's a bar, ones a dial.

Thanks. Do the ‘17-18 models also have that green, yellow, and red? So red would light up at ~6400 rpm or so? Anyone have a video of it in action. I recall test driving a 2SS back in 2016, but can’t recall that detail (it was an auto too, so might have some differences).

Only the ZL1 auto has the shift lights on 2017-2018 model year cars, GM in their penny pinching mode didn't update the SS software with this feature. The 1LE has it, too, not sure about the non-1LE manuals.

Just to confirm I'm understanding you correctly, you're saying the SS 1LE from 2017-2018 would have the shift lights?

I'm considering selling my SS and buying a used SS 1LE, hence the question.

Yes: https://www.camaro6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=478343 and I also recall a 1LE owner mentioning it.

I turn my HUD way down because I find if I'm looking at it, I miss potholes and other hazards in the road. Not so faint that I can't see it, but enough so it's not the main thing I'm looking at for most driving.

My 19 SS 1LE has the shift light which is very handy. I shift when it starts flashing. Goes well with the no-lift shift.

There is a slight delay on the HUD speed and rpm readout vs the dash. I only went to the drag strip once so far but for that and track days I have settled on using a target mph number from the HUD speedo readout for each shift: 47mph, 75, 104, 140. From PDR playback review, those targets usually allow me to shift right around 6500rpm or a bit more without hitting fuel cut.

The shift lights come on at the same rpm regardless of the gear so you will be shifting too early into the higher gears if you only reference shift lights.

Not every 1LE has the PDR, though.

Personally I give it a little bit of time after the shift light flashes. It's a very short amount of time(maybe 0.2 seconds) but that usually puts me right at 6500 RPM. I heard the saying that it's better to shift 200 RPM too early than 1 RPM too late.

That's just something you have to deal with in a manual. Autos will have more consistent shifts, not to mention faster.
