I’m a little OCD about oil changes. LOL. But should the AC Delco PF64 filter have a black seal under the holes? My Ford and Mopar filters do have that seal. I Just wanted to make sure.

The previous version was 12640445 and it had the ring. The new version is 12696048 and it does not. They changed the design several years ago so you aren't likely to find the "445" version in a store.

Okay I'm intrigued, how is the old filter better than the newer design? I mean really functionally better for your vehicle?

The new design has been around a while, any reports of filter related failures? any actual reduced filtering or oil flow issues?

Nice thread but it still doesn't answer the question. Why would someone prefer the old filter over the new? What is functionally better about the old one? Are there changes in the design, obviously yes. Does it make the new PF64 inferior in it's function and performance?


There are people searching stores throughout their travels and scouring the internet for the old filter and I'm just wondering why? How does it out perform the new one?

There have been threads where they have been cut open and the differences were shown. You can tell they are made cheaper looking at the top side. I also heard the filter media isnt quite as good on the new one. So I found a bought a bunch of the old ones just for the heck of it. Kind of like a stupid grown man treasure hunt.

The newer PF64 feels about like half the weight of the old one. It's designed just like the filter on my lawnmower with the little thin screen with the holes covering the thing. I definitely felt it was a budget move to make the change.

OP when you say screen are you talking about the anti-drainback valve?

The thing is I don't mess with the new PF64. I don't care if it's good enough or not, it feels like a budgeting move. Kind of like back in the day when you found out that Mobil 1 wasn't a true full synthetic after they lost the lawsuit with Castrol. It was like "damn that, if I'm going to spend for synthetic it's going to be some genuine 100% synthetic oil," so Amsoil, Redline, RP, GC, Mobil 1 0W40, etc became popular. Even though regular Mobil 1 oils are still very good, and most motors using it are very well protected a true full synthetic is better, and them doing that was a budget move, and they were lying about it. (along with most other OTC sythetics. It wasn't just Mobil 1, they were just the popular oil that got found out about) That it just not cool. That's why I don't mess with the new PF64.

I run a truck size filter. It's basically the same filter only a little longer. The filters I personally like most are Balwin. They're made in the U.S. by Clarcor who make filters for Amsoil and Hastings as well. They're well built and use quality components in them. The one I run is the Balwin B7449. I believe the PF64 equivalent from Balwin is the B7422. Both have a 20 PSI bypass valve. (BPV) The PF64 is like a 22 PSI BPV filter. You want to use one that's close to be safe. Most filters are in the 14 PSI range.

This isn't gospel, and is JMO's.

we use baldwin filters in all our equipment, same with every other company I've worked for. Quality products, didn't know they had one for our camaros. Same part number so I'm assuming the same filter is good for both lt1 and lt4? Will give them a try next time, thanks for the info!
