Oil leak

Hey fellow forum members,

I have been seeing a pretty significant oil leak from my 2016 SS Camaro and got under the car today. Found leak coming from the front bolt of this "block" on the driver side of the oil pan. Guessing it is part of the oil cooling system. Both the lower bolts (10mm) were not tight, the front one where the leak was very loose. I tightened them up but could not get to the upper ones, only one of which I could see from the bottom plus I have been under the weather the last few days. I plan on getting it lifted properly soon and see if I can get to the upper bolts and check them.

What is the block and was it likely leaking only due to the loose bolts?

Yes it's the engine oil cooler and yes there are 4 bolts. Torque to 89 LB-INCHES. 7-1/2 ft-lbs.

Seems to be a few loose bolts there. Might be something we need to start checking every other oil change.

I guess I'm probably wrong, but I've had my motor apart several times and I could swear that the oil cooler bolt holes are blind i.e. not open to oil on the inside of the pan. However, if these bolts are the source of the OP's leak then I must be wrong...

Common issue and mine leaked the same way because the bolts were loose. Once I tightened them up the leak went away. It's normally just the lower 2 bolts that are the issue.

So as a slight aside, this question about dripping oil, loose bolts, and that diagram of the oil cooler attachment has we wondering how the whole system works. I'll provide my guess here, and ask others to confirm or correct what I've got wrong:

- Oil cooler block brings in oil from oil pan, cools it, and sends it back to oil pan (two ports presumably).
- Oil cooler block has oil coming in on one side, engine coolant on the other, with some kind of internal dividing interface that allows heat exchange between the two fluids.
- Heated engine coolant from oil cooler block is pumped to front radiators (main or aux) whereupon the heat is cooled through air exchange.
