GM Recall - Loss of Power Steering Assist, 2017 Camaro & others

Essentially the power steering motor bolts can corrode and the motor assembly will break free. If it does that you’ll lose power steering or what GM says, “experience an increase in steering effect at low speeds”. There’s no software issue or restarting of the car that will fix that if it happens.

The fix is to replace the bolts. If the bolts are corroded to where they cannot be replaced, the next step is to replace the steering gear, inclusive of the power steering motor.

My 2018 ZL1 1LE is in the clear.

However, my 2017 Z06 has the recall.

New to the forum, lots of great information!!! I probably should have done my research before purchasing my car.

My story...
Purchased a new leftover 2017 50th Anniversary 2LT on 2/16/19. Dealer called me regarding the EPS recall on 2/22/19 and asked me to bring the car in or they'll come out with a rental and swap cars. They were anxious to get the car back as I believe they should not have sold it to me with an open recall.
Dropped my car off on 2/24/19 and it's been at the dealership without a completion date in sight! I did call Chevrolet Customer Care and they read the canned answer that they are working on the remedy and do not have a date.

I love the car (first Camaro for me) but frustrated that I can't enjoy it and instead am driving a Chevy Equinox.

I hope that they come with the remedy soon and will continue to bug Chevy and the dealership.

Pretty sure YOUR dealer sucks considering there is no remedy yet...no wonder why they were so quick.

If there is an open recall even if there is no fix in sight ,the dealer can't sell the car. Huge liability issue. I can see why they wanted it back. Once it's sold the liability is on the manufacturer only so the dealer won't keep your car.

And there is no fix yet, I had mine serviced yesterday and they couldn't do anything yet.

Thanks for the feedback! Before I call-out my dealer, I'll see if they can do anything for me, especially if the remedy takes a long time!

Sucks to be making payments on a car that is sitting at the dealership!

I'll keep you posted...

The recall on some of the 16s were for the possibility of a bolt rusting and breaking on the power steering assist unit. Took mine in and they replace the bolt. Took about 4 hours.

I'm hoping the remedy is just replacing the bolts as the previous recall. The current recall states "Dealers will replace the power steering gear assembly".

I'm one of those that hates anyone tearing into my cars !

I opened a case with GM's Customer Engagement Center. I was told they still have not identified the fix for this recall. This tells me it could be months before I get my car fixed.

I may pursue the Dealer Buyback since I'm paying money for a car I can't drive. Sure they gave me a rental, but it's definitely not the same as a Camaro.

From what I've read, buybacks could take time before I actually get my money back (cash down payment and loan).

I got the letter today, and it states "replace the steering gear" but no mention of just replacing bolts.

Does anyone have more insight on this?

Not sure what bad could happen from showing your VIN number though but you might want to edit that
