gas mileage??

Hi Everyone,
I know this is a question that is unordinary but I've read online that a lot of people are averaging 26 even 30 mpgs on their V6 camaros. Im only at 22.6 :/ i know i know "don't get a camaro if you're worried about gas mileage" but if there is a way i can get better that'd be cool too. my driving is about 60% highway and 40 back roads and i punch it but not all the time. Let me know what you guys think and if there's anything i can do to get that 26-30 range.

thanks!

Since I purchased my 2017 V6 2 months ago, I have been averaging 28.8 mpg.

Daily driver, commute to work 30 miles each way, 5 days per week, 80% highway/freeway.

Not sure why you only get 22 mpg, touring mode might help a little, do you have new tires?

good mileage with any engine, V4 thru V8 only occurs when you're driving at a constant speed or if you accelerate like a frustrating old granny driving a prius like I see EVERY DAY.

You can tank your mileage if you have a bunch of lights ...even if it makes up a minority of your commuting compared the the miles you put on the highway. And highway is only going to be good for your mileage if you're able to cruise in overdrive for extended periods of time.

To test .... find yourself a fairly flat highway stretch and set your cruise control and drive around 70mph. or whatever you're comfy at in the 60 - 80 range. You should average about 30mpg easy, even with the windows down. If you see mid 20's, i'd think something is wrong. If you are in the 30's then it's just your driving style / environment that is impacting your average mpg. Not a problem.

yeah were about the same then! my commute is about 20 miles each way. i dont know why my mileage is so low... i do have newish tires.. and im pretty much always in touring mode. I've had two flats so all 4 haven't been replaced at the same time so maybe that's why? all of them have been replaced differently.

okay great thanks for the insight... i sometimes travel about 60 miles of highway on the weekends and the best ive ever gotten was about 39.9 mpg for 25 miles and in the 30s for 50 mile and that wasnt with cruise control on.

hitting the low mid 40's isn't unheard of even in 50 mile averages.

But the car is tuned for aggressive acceleration, so any time you do have to accelerate it's going to eat fuel. The same goes for the turbo 4 (like any turbo car). Acceleration will drop that mpg like a rock. The v8 may not have to try as hard to accelerate at a rate that feels fun, but like a drug, once you feel the potential for it's higher acceleration rate it offers, you now need that all the time and so the mpg will drop just as bad.

It's why you can be guaranteed that the future of driving is boring and uneventful because the most fun parts of it are the most inefficient and wasteful and so will be the easiest to eliminate. Europe puts a cap on speed, but the real gas saver and pollution controller will be a limit on acceleration rates.

If you USED to be getting good mileage and then it drops off:
- change your intake filter
- change your oil
- make sure tires are properly inflated, 35 PSI.

If you always got bad MPG, its your driving

You can get great gas mileage but it's not that easy. Manual transmission is better than automatic for this in my opinion. I have achieved 40 MPG in my past 2016 WRX, 32 MPG in my 2017 RS Camaro and almost 40 MPG in my 2017 Fiesta ST. The factors are- straight flat road, little to no wind, tire pressure, one person in the car, clean oil, AC off, steady speed of 45-65 MPH, a few stops are OK, easy take offs, knowing your engine well and the optimum shift points and keeping the RPM low enough without lugging the engine. It's really boring driving though but it can be done.

Some cars though you just don't get good gas mileage no matter what you do or how you drive. I find it's harder to get good gas mileage with automatics in general.

When you’re on the highway make sure you use cruise control that’s one way to get better gas mileage. My last couple cars I noticed this I get 3-4 mpg more using cruise control that without it.

Look at the instant fuel economy readings to get a feel for what uses gas the most. Highways with high speed limits and traffic lights, or backcountry roads with a lot of stop signs at intersections are the worst for fuel economy besides stop and go city driving. So you can be on some highways and rural roads and still get bad fuel economy. We have too many of these poorly designed roads around here and they tend to be dangerous too.

For acceleration, relatively low rpms and moderate to higher loads are most efficient. The V8 does this well, tons of low RPM torque, but with 6.2L it's not efficient unless you're in higher gears or using it for heavier loads, and even then... With some turbo cars you might be best off accelerating slower if it keeps the turbo from spooling but with NA you're probably better off with a faster rate of acceleration, but keeping rpms down as well.

The days of the manual getting better gas mileage than the automatic are done and gone. Todays auto gets the same gas mileage as the manual version of the vehicle.

yeah i have an automatic and have the AC on a lot so that could be a big factor. everything else like the oil, ties pressure and what not is maintained and kept up on perfectly so maybe its the way i drive hahah

okay thanks ill check the intake filter because the air is always around 35 and oil is changed at recommended mileage. or maybe its my driving haha i dont always kill the pedal though so i dont think its me.
