My Estimation of Actual HorsePower
So here is my estimation of actual HP on the LS1,LS2, LS3 and new LT1
This is based on internet searches of crate motor testing with full intake and headers. All numbers based on installed in the cart with manual transmission with 15% rule of thumb drivetrain loss: LS1puts out 405 HP on an engine dyno, typical rear wheel HP on dyno is ~ 300 HP. Calculate: 300/.85 (15% drivetrain loss for manual tranny) = 352 HP installed in Camaro/Vette (with exhaust and intake restrictions) LS2 = 465 crate full headers on engine dyno. Typical rear wheel dyno numbers of 355 RWHP. Assuming 15% drivetrain loss, the LS2 in the Vette and GTO is ~415 HP (with exhaust and intake restrictions) LS3 = 495 crate and 380 typical rear wheel dyno therefore 445 HP installed in Camaro/Vette (with exhaust and intake restrictions) LT1 = 531 HP, 420 "typical"(not a lot of data yet) rear wheel dyno therefore 495 HP installed in Camaro/Vette (with exhaust and intake restrictions) Also, this indicates that the MOST that someone can gain with cold air and full headers is 40-45HP. Anything above this for headers and CAI would be marketing BS. With a 15% drivetrain loss, 45 HP (ish) seems to agree with real world numbers of 30-40 HP for headers and cold air on the LS motors. Another point is, thiese estimations seems to validate that GM underrates its engines on a regular basis. My 6-speed manual LS1 Camaro was rated at 310 HP and put down 302 RWHP corrected , bone stock, paper filter. http://www.enginelabs.com/news/danzi...ngine-and-wow/ http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/engine/...e-engine-dyno/ http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/vem...-crate-engine/ http://www.superchevy.com/how-to/vem...-crate-engine/ What do you guys think? From the link above: "...Chris Muzio at Danzio Performance Engineering recently bolted the dry-sump version (PN 19329997 available at Pace Performance) of the LT1 crate engine to his dyno..."
Why not just take the entire car as is instead of estimating driveline loss, etc? ....which has already been done btw.

I think you need to read up on SAE horsepower ratings. That's what I think.

The problem is that there are "experts" on here, aka shop owners trying to sell things, that try and say that SAE doesn't mean much.
"It just can't make less than the official rating!" "It allows for variation!" Because it totally makes sense to have one engine making 460hp and another making 495 hp....who needs manufacturing consistency. |

The HP is measured at the crank and is SAE certified. I've seen the SAE certification in another thread and it was measured at 455hp at the crank. It was dated sometime in 2013 to coincide with the Corvettes release but that wouldn't change anything since it's the same engine. The 15% drivetrain loss for manuals and 20% loss for automatics has been in place for many years however modern day powertrains are more efficient so the 15%/20% rule of thumb can't be a blanket rule for all powertrains anymore.
