GVWR and other Fun Facts by Farmer Fran
GVWR = The maximum total weight of the vehicle including all fluids, occupants and cargo (cargo is anything you put in the vehicle – anything)
• The GVWR sticker on the car includes any options from the factory, so cars weights will vary. • This is a custom sticker from your build sheet. • Trucks tend to be worse due to all the accessories you can add. But this is a different subject GAWR (front and rear) = the maximum weight each axle can have loaded on them. This is 2 separate numbers on the sticker. The combined axle weight ratings can sometimes be higher than the GVWR but not the other way around. Payload = the weight of all occupants and cargo (cargo is anything you put in the vehicle – anything) Curb Weight = the weight of the vehicle and all fluids from the factory, this includes a full tank of gas per regulation. If you take the GVWR sticker (not a booklet – those are generic weights) and subtract the Payload sticker you have the vehicle weight that includes all fluids and options. My car 4663 GVWR minus 0688 Payload equals 3945 Vehicle Curb weight GVWR = Gross Vehicle weight rating GAWR = Gross Axle weight Rating |

That is correct, GVWR, tells you how much you can haul for a passenger car it’s basically occupants plus luggage or groceries inside.
Really comes into play more with say a pickup and dump trucks, which can be for a small truck 2 ton, i.e. 4000 lbs. The AWR, can be exceeded if you are under weight of the GVWR but have to much over one axle. That’s just one of the things they check for, when you see the truck inspection station on the highways. One of my many jobs is a NYS weightmaster, here’s my Camaro with me in it on my 200000 lbs Fairbanks scale. I am also fill out all the titles for Government to private transfer of vehicles. |

I recall many years ago we bought back a Solstice because the customer and his wife exceeded the GVWR.

I agree. Farmerfran is making the calculation for purposes of tow fees. Again, the only way to know what your weighs, in my case, is to drive it onto a racetrack scale and climb out and get off the scale.

So JSH, maybe I misunderstood, did you comment in the other thread that your ZLE is ~3600 pounds?

Ya I doubt it’s 3980lbs.
That may have a 150 or 175lb allowance for a driver. I would bet 3750 ish on the scales. |

This is what I've been saying since day one... I can't believe how fat these cars have become.
A fully loaded 95 Impala SS weighs 4300 ish. (some sites say 4000 ish).

M6 ZLE, with and without driver. Sticker says GVWR of 4607. Never mind the date.....
Payload ratings for trucks get tricky when you are towing. Tongue load and cargo doesn’t leave much payload capacity for passengers. Priorities! |
