Looking to go from 20 to 18

I have a 2k20 2SS w/brembos and no mag ride. I live in NYC and it is my daily. Looking to go down from 20 to 18 for ride comfort and avoid damaging/scraping tires and rims. NYC roads are CRAP.

Has anyone gone from 20 to 18 and noticed a difference?

Hey tbdk93, I went the other way (18 to 20), and 18s definitely rode softer on the 50 aspect ratio sidewall tires they came with from the factory. In terms of sizing, you could do 245/50/18 in the front and 275/45/18 (or maybe 285/40/18) in the rear to keep heights very close to OEM, if you want to stick to the same width (8.5/9.5) for your new staggered wheels.

Of course you could also upgrade to wider wheels at the same time, but since this is a daily, I doubt you want to spend more than absolutely necessary on the new setup. You will lose some cornering performance if you get tires with softer sidewalls, but again, if this is a daily, I don't think you'll mind much.

The one thing I'm not sure about is SS brake fitment with 18s. According to wheel sizing calculators, you'll have 25mm less radial space for the brakes, so you can measure if brakes would fit with these shorter wheels, but someone else with firsthand experience with this swap will have to confirm fitment to 100%.

The OEM 18s vs the OEM SS 20s are definitely a smoother ride, I did the same going from 18 to 20s. Also the 18s are usually not run flat while the 20s may be run flat which add some rougher ride as well.

Yes, the difference was significant as I recall. However, in all honesty, it's been a while, and I think tires themselves can make almost as much a difference. For example, simply upgrading from the stock Goodyear runflats to Michelin PS4S non-runflats in the same sizes, reusing the same 20" wheels was a night and day change. You might want to try something similar first, and if you still don't like ride quality, then contemplate new wheels. (I know there is some risk to this, but you should be able to flip quality 20" tires and come out at a minimal loss even then.)

Yes go down to 18s. Better ride, handling, and price. So stupid these cars came with 20s, especially the 1LEs.

I do not have runflats. I got the car from hertz and they put generals on them.

I do not have run flats on them. It's some general Max tires. The 20's are still a rough ride. I think ima go down to 18's.

Ah, I see, makes sense then. The General G-Max isn't a bad tire, at least I've seen it on several dailied Challengers and Mustangs, so maybe more sidewall will give you what you're after.
