Always knew 10k oil change intervals was marketing (mainly BMW) unsupported by science (used oil analysis). Here's more evidence

5000 miles is a good starting point for light duty street, 3000 miles for aggressive street driving with high boost and/or fuel dilution

I'd say 5k max but I still do 3k because I pleasure drive my car hard. And its cheap insurance. Its not like its a Bugatti and its $20k for an oil change.

I saw the same article and wasn’t all that shocked the results. I change my oil at a maximum of 5K in my truck and 3K in my Camaro.

10k oiled changes are fine if you’re going to lease it and return to the dealer.

With full synthetic it shouldn’t be an issue. If the dealer is putting in reg dino oil that’s prob not a good idea. Also depends if it’s 10k city or 10k highway. HUGE difference.

This is click-bait nonsense. My undergrad degree is in chemistry and I have friends who are ChemE's, some in petroleum. The best first-line source for information on oils on the internet is bobistheoilguy. For the most part those guys are very serious and not trying to spew propaganda.

change mine before winter and every spring. then 2500 mi intervals in between. it's a lot of oil but wherever. car is on ethanol and gets flogged.

Synthetic still accumulates contaminants at the same rate though, so the argument for longer drain intervals by virtue of synthetic only doesn't necessarily hold up. Engine use and whether you are boosted has the most impact

I’ve helped a few fleets extend oil intervals. Synthetics are far superior to Dino oil. We spend most of our time filtering the oil before it gets put into the engine. New oil is extremely dirty, that’s where most of the particulate contamination damage happens. Typically is in the 21/19/17 ish range. That’s bad. Think for a second a human hair is 80 microns, limit of sight is 40 microns. Your engine oil filter is 10 micron or better if you are lucky. When you add oil with your funnel that you wiped down with a rag that is bad. If you track wear in an engine you will see when new oil was added.

Synthetics don’t oxidize and break down as quickly as Dino oil. However i have had some customers where it makes sense to change the filter and keep the same oil as it’s plugged. Depends on the case…

10k may be fine for high-TBN synthetics, certain cars (not all are created equal), mild driving conditions and mild weather. 10k may be not fine. I do 10k (or annually, whichever comes first) on my DD v8 2012 Genesis and the engine is fine at 91k miles. The transmission will die long before the engine wears out. An OLM would be nice, but I granny drive the thing so not really an issue.

My personal experience, based on Blackstone Labs oil analysis on a V6 Camaro and an Infiniti with the 3.7 VQ engine, is that 5k changes are unnecessary with Mobil 1. On the Camaro I do track days and autocross, and after 5k the oil is consistently in good shape. The Infiniti is street driven and after 7.5k, the oil is in very good shape.
The Camaro gets the benefit of 1 quart overfill for track days, followed by 1 quart drain before I leave the track - so that does refresh the oil a bit. the Camaro doesn't burn oil. The Infiniti doesn't burn oil either, even though it has more than 150k miles.
Old habits are hard to change, and I am still drawn to 5k changes for my street/track car, but I've started giving my street car 10k between changes. I am confident 10k is A-O.K. for street cars.

IMO, modern drivetrains generally last a very long time if you follow the manufacturer's recommended schedule.

My BMW manual called for 25,000 KM or 15,000 mile oil changes with BMW Long Life oil, OR 2 years. I did just that for 3 years, and 4-5 Nurburgring track days per year, and the car and the oil were just fine.

These posts make me lough. Anyone who thinks they need a 5,000 mile oil change with good synthetic oil and a good filter in a modern car are ... gullible to say the least.

I have done 7500 mile Blacstone analysis with good oil and 4 track days, and they said keep going. If you use conventional it's a different story.

Oh, just for S&Gs here is my 2 year old, 11,000 mile old 0W-40 in my BMW M2 taking me to a 7:53 Nurburgring Nordschleife lap. 7000RPM happened more than once in this video under full load. Like it has many, many times over the 2 years I actually had that oil in. It was like the Honey Badger. It didn't care! And this was a 15PSI Turbo charged, direct injection motor!

Enjoy 5,000 mile oil change guys! Keep throwing that money away like the oil industry wants you to! 5000 mile oil change idea with full synthetic and good filter is Absurdity to the MAX.

All my DD'ers get 3,000 mile FULL synthetic oil changes, my Camaro gets (at worst) a 1 year (~2,000 mile oil change, Mobil1 0W-40 ESP Formula and a PF64 OEM Filter)...
