Major Sevice at 30k or 45k and Cost?

Just had my oil changed at the Chevy dealership and was asked if I wanted to have the 30k major service. I said no thanks because I wanted to check the owners manual again and this site. The Manual says 45k. I know that it depends on my area and driving habits. My camaro is a daily drive and I live in congested LA. I have 32k and the vehicle runs great. I was told the 30k service runs $1,350. That seems outrageously high but am I wrong? Any major work to my cars, I have my own mechanic. The service rep said part of the high cost is changing the fluid and work on the rear differential. I Need a reality check and crap detection.
Thank you in advance!

Had my engine oil, and differential fluid changed at 1500 miles, first time break in. Brought my own engine filter, and oil, the guy charged me $50---and let me run around underneath when it was up on the lift. This is my own personal mechanic, real thorough guy.

Think I saw at the dealer, if you have the tranny flushed, would cost something like $279.
What else you would need done that would be major other than checking brakes, I don't know
FWIW

Thats $300 higher than my 40k "major" service on my A4 which includes plugs, filters/oil and a DSG transmission fluid change. And being in NY I'm not in a cheap part of the country.

Uh, our spark plugs are 100,000 mile service life and our coolant is 150,000 mile service life. And even if you DID want to change those early, they're super easy to do and should cost nowhere near $300.00. Outside of just a regular oil change, air filter change, and automatic transmission fluid every 45k, the whole "major service" thing sounds like a complete rip off.

I'll pull up the maintenance chart and have a look.

These are screen captures from a 2016 SS owner's manual I just downloaded from Chevrolet.

Look at the items for 30k miles. Doesn't look like a major service to me.

Again there’s no sin in changing your fluids and spark plugs as early and often as you want other than wasting your own money. But don’t ever let a dealer or mechanic tell you it’s required or your warranty is void or your car will blow up.

Truth is as well engineered as modern cars are today resulting in longer service life and fewer required maintenance components, dealer service departments aren’t as busy as they used to be so they make a lot of stuff up hoping for gullible customers.

The original 1967 Camaro SS 350 required a carb adjustment, cap and rotor adjustment, and full set of spark plugs every 15-20,000 miles. Spark plug technology was the dark ages then. All that mechanical stuff goes out of calibration after some time using it and the car will start to run like crap.

Modern technology has virtually eliminated all of that. Oil changes can go 5,000 miles or more, spark plugs are good for 100k, coolant good for 150k, and obviously fuel injection, computerized engine management, and electronic ignition coils have eliminated the carb and distributor.

The service department today is really like the lonely Maytag man waiting for something to just break.

OP - if I were you I’d film your mechanic changing the rear diff fluid and bring that video to your dealer, along with the invoice that he probably won’t charge you more than $50.00 to do it...... and show them both to the dealer. Your dealer can choke on it “$1300 because changing the rear diff fluid is so hard or time consuming” my ass.

That’s the kind of crap that gets fists into noses.

I have never gone to any dealership for any of my vehicles for these rip off service interval checks. I change my own filters and use a good local shop for fluid changes. I have saved thousands of dollars and have never jeopardized a warranty in the process.

Cost of service here in Dubai for the SS as follows (it's cheaper here!)

50,000km (31,000miles) $158 Dollars (581AED)
80,000km (49,000miles) $469 Dollars (1,727AED)

Parts tend to cost more here, but labour is cheap.

the rear diff is 1.2qts of fluid and a drain and fill plug. take maybe 15 mi to do including putting the car up. GM charges $150 for it. they should be charging $20 $13 fluid 15min labor.

I felt like it was a load of bunk when I went to the dealer yesterday for some 30000 maintenance which I know doesn’t exist. I know they gotta find ways to make money in service but that’s just ripping someone off. They see women coming a mile a way and attempt to run the list. Other than a cabin filter, I’m not due for anything until 72000 miles. Even then it’s just an Engine air filter.

I had a local shop change the oil, diff, tranny fluid at about 36,000 miles. Almost exactly 3 years for me.

I went at around 33,000 miles. She said 30,000 is a major service. I thought it was included. Anyway she said it’s $469. I looked at her sell sheet. They had one for $169. Plus version at $269 and super option at $469. They are had an inspection component (which I think is what is actually required) plus all kinds of pointless services like fuel system/oil system cleaner etc. Probably they just dump 2 cans of “stuff” into the car and charge you $469.

Good thing I caught it before I got hit. She sensed my apprehension and said do you just want the oil change and alignment? To which I naturally said yes.
