Dealership says small oil seep
I am looking into purchasing a 2018 Camaro SS with 70k miles on it, the dealership said that there is an oil seep (they deemed not critical) and sent me the attached picture. Is this something I should be concerned about, or could this just be some loose bolts/filters I could fix myself?

Is this a local dealership? I'm near the KC area on the Kansas side. If your serious about it I would take it to an independent shop and have an inspection done or at least take a hard look at it yourself. If it is way out of state I wouldn't bother with it. I made the mistake of buying a car in Texas and against my instincts, I bought it anyways because I had driven so far. Long story short I had to put a rebuilt longbock in it myself when the bottom end let go.
I don't even consider used cars now that aren't a close enough drive to turn around and drive home from if need be!

It shouldn’t be leaking anything. I wouldn’t buy it unless they can find that problem and fit it. And then steam clean the motor.

There are stories from others on here about leaking oil pans. If it's just a loose bolt or two, that's one thing. But if it's a problem with the gasket seal, I think there's significantly more labor involved to take the pan off and reseal it.
You're better off getting in writing that they'll replace the seal if necessary to completely stop the leak. Otherwise I wouldn't take the chance. |

I had the leaky oil pan on my car, it only took about a 1/4 turn on 4 oil pan bolts and it stopped. Looked much like that picture. I think that they're being really honest but they need to repair it even if it's turning a couple of bolts. I've not seen any of these that needed anything more than a wrench and it was gone, no need to get in to the oil pan and replace a gasket.
If that's a GM dealer I'd be shocked that they didn't just repair it, however they choose to. If it's on a used lot, I'm not too surprised. I'm in KC up by the airport. |

I'd be concerned that this might turn into a "large dollar seep"...

I'd let the dealer know about the common loose oil pan bolts, but make sure you're physically there to see the tech check / tighten those bolts. You want visual proof that the bolts are in fact loose to give you a level of confidence that this is the issue and it's not something else.
If the oil pan bolts are already tight, I'd look for another car.

Let them fix it as a condition to buy, I wouldn't buy as is.

Modern cars don't leak most of the time. So why buy one that does?

If you are looking to buy it...then pass. Or make the owner fix it.
