2022 Copper Free Brake Pad Replacement options "BCD Brakes"

Has anyone had to replace theirs yet?

I have done 5 track days and I am almost to the squealer bars.

Haven't found anything online for either stock or aftermarket/Track pads.

Ill probably have to just get them from GM. The stock pads are really good anyways. Was just hoping to get more than 5 days on them lol.

I spoke to Porterfield about custom pads. All they need is the backing plate specs or you can send the backing plate to them. They have many pad material choices.

I ran Raybestos ST43s on my Gen5. I have a BCD 1LE on its way, but I'd like to try out the Ferodo DS1.11, unfortunately I do not think Porterfield deals with Ferodo pad material. But they do build custom pads from the Raybestos materials.

You can see pics in there from one of my cars. The rears are regular J6H caliper with same rotor size, so any existing pad fits. Up front, the regular J6H pad size fits. The front BCD J6H backing plate just has a slightly different design for different pin locations, but, any regular J6H compatible pad fits. However, there will be a small area that a regular J6H sized pad won't touch the wear surface of the larger 398mm rotor.

The other question is the EBCM calibration compatibility with different pad friction coefficients. We will all get a better understanding as BCD J6H cars get tracked. I have not tracked my 22 SS 1LE yet that has the BCD J6H brakes. Not that I am expecting an issue, but, without data...

FYI - 18" drop barrel race wheels don't play nice with the larger front BCD J6H calipers.

Can the pads be replaced with zl1 pads? Was thinking about adding this option on my order.

talk to ken at kns brakes i think he was working with hawk and some other brands to get a replacement made !

Yes. The rears are the same caliper/rotor as the non-BCD ZL1 rears. RUQWIKR is correct that the fronts will fit and J6H (aka ZL1) front pad, but there will be a small (couple of mm) strip on the ID of the rotor face that won't be used and you'll want a new rotor if you want to go back to the full BCD pad size.

As krops also alluded to, brake pad manufacturers are starting to pick up the BCD pad shape, too. For now I think they need to be custom ordered, but I'd wager it won't be long before they're a regularly stocked option as more of these cars are made and more people start requesting them.

I have no authority to speak, but I have the SS 1LE w/ BCD brakes on order, and from my research for aftermarket pads for the BCD brakes, I found KNSBrakes listing to be the most helpful in regard to sourcing the pads.

Hopping on here to ask - does anyone have replacement front rotors or rings for the BCD kit? I see rears, I don't see fronts anywhere (KNS, Wildhammer, etc)

I have spoken with some people this past year that have tracked their SS 1LE's with the BCD brakes.

Also have spoken with someone who has swapped the ZL1 brakes onto their SS LE.

The ZL1/BCD brake setup is significantly higher in thermal headroom than the regular 370/340mm system. You can get away with running the stock replacement regular ZL1 brake's "Brembo HP1000" (Ferodo DS Performance) pads without concern and save some $$. Honestly, maybe just go with Ferodo DS2500. I love the DS11.1, but I doubt that pad is needed with the amount of thermal capacity the ZL1/BCD rotors have and on an SS 1LE. Doing this also keeps the pad characteristics well-within what's assumed from the factory. This is exactly what one of the BCD-equipped SS 1LE's had fitted: regular ZL1 stock pads - word was zero (0) thermal issues at any of the tracks they've been (Gingerman, Grattan, Waterford, Mid-Ohio).

No aftermarket rings available.

I'll echo Mountain's post. At my track, Pitt Race, the BCDs on my SS 1LE have been thermal overkill.

I have run the ZL1 sized pads in the HP1000, DS2500 and DS1.11 compounds. 9 track days between the three, no problems. I ran ZLE sized 3Rs and the DS1.11s at the most recent events and I pushed the brakes even more than usual and they were great. No odd transfer layer colors, nice even coating. My temp stickers on the rotors are still at 250*F. No ice mode when running both the OE 3s and 3Rs in ZLE sizes. No abnormal transfer layer vibrations or colors. I love this pad on track and they are great on the street with just a little bit of squeal. Great firm pedal with great modulation. This part is super important to me, especially for street driving. I desire outstanding pedal feel and response and fun street driving (Tail of the Dragon for example) makes every brake application a pleasure. Yes, the HP1000 is a step above the OE BCD pads, Then the DS2500 takes it up another notch vs the HP1000s with better upper temp friction. Then the DS1.11s offer a much firmer pedal with even better friction across the temp range. If there is another negative beside their high price, it is that they are wearing the rotor. Since they are a race pad, they are designed to run at the higher temps. At low street temps they are in the abrasive mode of friction and this is what wears the rotor. The large BCD mass plus great Gen6 brake cooling contributes to very cool running temps on street.

I drove my buddy's 680 HP A10 SS 1LE with BCDs also at Pitt Race, OE 3's and HP1000 pads that same day I ran mine with the 3Rs and DS1.11s. While I braked earlier vs driving my SS 1LE, the HP1000s got the job done. They have a softer feel and longer pedal vs the 1.11s.

A stock car race car buddy went for a ride with me and we talked about my DS1.11 brakes before we went out. He said his race car has pretty good braking, unknown Hawk pads. After the ride, he was amazed at my brakes. He said the were way better than his stock car.

HP1000s are relatively inexpensive and readily available. They make a great upgrade over the OE BCD pads.
