If someone can wait for a sale or holiday, sure. I currently don't see it under $460-470 anywhere. That said, the R7 is clearly superior to my unit, but it's 2x the price. Up to OP to decide.

dissembling the uniden, before i put it under the hood, to run pair of wires for a micro speaker for audible alert is also an option

The current $414 on Amazon looks to be toward the bottom end of the price range according to camelx3. May see $20 off in the future. But not much more.

Uniden R4 is my choice. A few things to consider:

-Decide if you want arrows. I don't, I really don't care at all about that feature, so I don't need R7, R8 or V1. All I want is an alert with meter so I know when they are near and when I'm close to actually being clocked.

-Consider what the local cops use to measure speed. In my state they only use Ka band, so I don't care much about false alerts from X or K band. They used to use laser but either it's very rare or they gave up on using it. If all you need is a Ka band detector, all those false alert features won't matter.

-Size... R8 is much larger than R4, it's just too large for my tastes.

Price... I also have an older Redline, the new one at $800 is priced at the ridiculous end of the spectrum. R4 was $350. Seems just as good so far.

Mounting... I paid big-$ for blendmount and mirror tap for the Redline in my Camaro. New dd has a stick-on mount using 3M double sided trim tape and a generic mirror tap, got both on etsy for around $20 shipped. I like the stick-on better than the blendmount anyways, I can put the detector to the side of the mirror and not have it under the mirror, where it has more of an impact on visibility.

I'd also recommend using Waze at the same time.

$350 for an R4 vs. R7 for $414? Can’t see giving up arrows and rear facing radar for $64. Maybe it’s just a SE phenomena, but we have wolf packs and our speed traps will involve LEO’s sitting on overpasses, exit ramps, entrance ramps, medians and in many cases coming up behind you. You definitely want to know where the signal is coming from and when you’ve passed it versus a ‘dumb light’ that just tells you signal strength.

Remember the R7 catches 2 miles behind you and in front of you. Great peace of mind.

Yeah, I don't care about any of that. R7 was $450 when I was shopping and I don't want or need the arrows and the thing is also way too big.

R4 is also brand new tech, better in some ways vs R7, if you want the same tech with arrows you need the R8.

Vortex picked the R7 over the R4.

Just FYI, you can still get in trouble for that in Virginia since the glove box is accessible while driving.

I've always just put it in the glove compartment when going around the beltway from Maryland to Virginia. I don't think anyone, LEOs included, would appreciate me pulling over onto the shoulder of the beltway to put my RD in the trunk. As it is, while it is in the glove compartment they can't detect it with their RDD and they can't see it anyway. If they'd like to search my car I'd like to know the reason.

Ahh, thanks for the info, I didn't know the glove box was off limits, too

Uniden any model with a Blend mount (former Escort owner). That said I have an R7 and an R4, they're both crazy sensitive but I do like the arrows, if the R4 dies it'll be replaced with the R8. My only knock on the R7 is size and location of the mute button.

I have an Escort as well. I bought a 12v splitter off Amazon for giggles and ran both down the highway. Wasn’t even close. The R7 is far more sensitive. And I never missed the arrows until I had them. Frankly I thought it was more of a Valentine gimmick. Now, I wouldn’t own a detector without them.

Looks like the best price on the R8 is currently $624. Camelx3 shows $599 as the best price on January 1st of this year.

EDIT - full disclosure, that price is a refurb unt.

I have both Valentine and Uniden R7. Have had only Valentine products for over 20 years and really liked them until recently. They don't have built into the unit GPS and auto blocking of false indications. That feature requires hooking up a phone which I won't do. The R7 has everything in one package and works great. I had the Valentine in my ND2 Miata, but sold the car. My Valentine now sits in the tool box.
