Careful with dealership maintenance!!

Well long story short, I needed to change my ZL1s oil prior to last weekends track day. Called my local dealership and specifically asked if they had the 0W40 Supercar oil in stock. They said they did have a lot and I had them hold the appropriate quantity for me. Went to pick it up and sure as shit, "European Formula". I told them it was the incorrect one, and they insisted that is what GM is sending to them for our cars, even had a tech supervisor come and tell me the same thing. I asked them if i was to bring my car in for a standard oil change if that is what they are being directed to use, and they insisted YES. Said they couldn't get the "Supercar 0W40" in. On my drive home I ordered 2 cases that showed up the next day on my doorstep. WTF GM!!!

That’s why you change the oil yourself and put in what brand/weight you want! I never have let the dealership change mine.

Yeah, I do all of my maintenance ESPECIALLY before a track day, just wanted to make everyone aware of what they may be getting put in their engines.

Thats why you bring your own oil and filter if you're going to let the dealer do it.

They started the DexosR oil for the 2023 year model ZL1 before that, it was Dexos2. So if you go look at your year model manual, it'll say 0w40 oil that meets the Dexos2 specs. If that is what they are doing, then they aren't wrong.

It's just like my 2018. Technically my 2018 manual says to use 5w30 Dexos2 spec oil as does my oil cap says to use 5w30. Of course the LT4 in the ZL1 hasn't changed but if I and the dealer are following what the 2018 manual says, then we're doing what GM recommends. Its not like they send a letter or email out to all the ZL1 owners every time they make a change.

Though it gets confusing when you look at the online version vs the physical version you have in your car. GM makes changes to the online that contradicts what your physical version says.

Of course we're all more socially connected than we were 30 years ago so of course we're going to learn what they new recommendation is for (whatever) with our cars when the new manual comes out.

I spent 55 years , under , over , in , my Cars . I Drag Raced for 25 plus years , Did all my own work right or wrong , that's how you learn . I'm almost 70 , and believe me , I would love to do my own maintenance, my mind says yes , my body says NO .
The local oil change places not a chance . I do have a Chevrolet Dealership close and have to let it go , as hard as it is to let someone else do the work. I have no choice anymore.
With all the maintenance records from them , they are liable if something happens.

Careful, you might summon the "lookie, yet another oil thread" genie who'll then invoke the "GM engineers know best" crowd I use Amsoil Signature, too, btw.

I just let my dealer do my first, complimentary oil change at 500 miles. I watched them, they used 0-40 supercar but I will definitely do my own oil changes from here on… I hate letting them touch my car.

0W-40 Supercar I've not seen that in the wild, any where be it local or online. Some sites mark it special order. I'm not sure that they're wrong, per se, but what they told you and what they did are suspish.

Too I'd never really believe that if I brought them 10 qts of Supercar or anything else that that's what they'd put in the car and not keep it for themselves. You have to know that it's only the lowest ranking "mechanics" and kids that do oil changes at a dealership.
I cherish that I can do it at home myself.

May be so at certain dealerships, but not wherever I had my car serviced. People with integrity don't steal customers' products, and, in my case, it was never the most recently hired flunky that did the oil change (if done at the dealership, typically only along with some other service).

Good point, I wonder if all the Supercar oil is Dexos R, and what the difference between that and dexos 2 is in the older 0w40 previous version, and does using either matter in out LT4s?

Bummer. I'm very lucky here in Albuquerque. Only one dealer master technician has ever worked on my car, and his work has been perfect. They installed my exhaust, BMR suspension, and Katech oil pump, and the work has been 100% perfect every time.

I totally understand the anxiety and frustration taking a ZL-1 to a dealer for work. It's your special baby, but to them it's just another obstacle to get over as quickly as possible, so they can get home and drink a beer.

Before it was 5w30 dexos2 then 0w40 dexos2 for 2023 its 0w40 dexosR.

Unless GM has a document explaining why the change then you can run whatever your year model manual says or go with the 2023 recommendation.

Probably just an oil they believe is better for high temps vs trying to save the cats from melting.
