Front seal failure with 16 lbs of boost

Well I originally posted this on the drag race area but now that I've got the proof of what happened I thought I'd make a new post since I'm boosted kinda a guy. So went to Gateway last weekend and after my second pass I opened the hood and there was a lot of oil on the belts, hoses, basically every where on the front of the motor. I suspected that was the issue since the other White Magnuson car had the same failure at 16 lbs of boost also. Today I had Matt pull the old seal out and sure as shit it was a big mess, part of it was folded over and I thinks its supposed to be round. Ha. So got it all done and no leaks as I had him put the Ls3 seal which is much stronger then the paper thin Lt1 seal. I'll be back at the track in two weeks with Two More Meth/water and a better breather system so this doesn't happen again. I'll post the pics shortly.

Don't think so, everything is good so far. But you never know and I'll find out at that track next time. Guess I could do a little scoping before I go out next time.

According to Laynlo, this was supposed to be round. Here’s a picture of his Crank seal...

You have many broken ring lands. Compression test and leak down will not show this nor will a bore scope. The problem will be below the top ring land.

Andy, how can you tell that from looking at the seal?

remind me whats done to your motor? what do you have for crank case ventilation?

my motor flipped that seal at 12psi, i improved my crank case ventilation and it was fine after that, over 700rwhp for a lot of runs.

Motor is bone stock and I'm changing the PCV system after this also. Mike from Magnuson is making a hose kit for me to update mine to match their system. Parish, what kind of setup do you use.

even though i flipped my seal without hurting the motor based on what others seem to experience it seems there is strong chance you did hurt the motor. 16psi is a lot of power.

i still don't know if people are breaking ring lands because of tight ring gaps or if they are just running out of fuel/octane. with my port injection i have plenty of e85 and ran it on the rich side and never hurt anything. 113mph in the 1/8th would indicate it is making some decent power. the fact that many people hurt the motor right around the place where the fuel system starts to run out may not be a coincidence.

i used mighty mouse catch can and built a basic system. one large hose from each valve cover to the catch can. i just pushed the hose onto the factory valve cover fittings. they are pretty big fittings.

You can see the hoses in this pic. I still have a stock LT front crank seal and have been up to 16psi with my built motor. Probably in the 900+hp range. I planed on changing to the ls3 seal but they sent me the wrong seal so I just went with the stock one.

I went back with the LS3 seal, the Lt1 seal is pretty thin and I can see why it didn't take that kinda boost. I running plenty of water/meth and plan on adding another nozzle and run a 1000cc and a 500cc, I do run VP 109, Lingenfelter Big Bore Pump and Lt4 injectors. My data logs show my fuel rail pressure is hanging there at 2000 to 2200 psi during the full run. I think on one run I ran 111 in 1/8, but my 6.46 pass it was 110. I think I've run out of chances to get in the 9s till fall, Missouri heat is already moving in. I don't no if anything is hurt, hopefully not. I'm not a fan of the drop in piston thing but I have a lot of events scheduled for Magnuson and if something does happen and no block or cylinder issues I'd just have to go that route to get through the rest of the year.

Just my day to day experiences

Just my experiences, but hey 1 mans problems don't equal all others.

Unfortunately my shop and others have seen far more broken ring lands than just flipped seals.

The good news is your going to find out 1 way or another

I am excited

Buddy, if you are going with pistons, I will order mine too and drop the wicked vert off to hang out with you for a few weeks. Doing pistons mean it would be time to do the cam also. 😀

Andy you are right, I hope your wrong and I'm well still not sure. Ha. I have my belly pan if something happens. I still my do a leak down test just for shits and grins. I'm not excited to find out your could be right. Mike Sitar from Magnuson had this same issue when they went 9.92 last year. Replace it with the LS3 seal and all was good so I'm hoping mine will be the same and nothing is wrong.
