Here's a guy most here don't know anything about, Greg Stanfield, former pro stock racer, now Louisiana NHRA Camaro racer, who recently won a national championship and build engines such as Justin Lamb's Super Stock engines with Maggie 2.65. If you want a max effort engine, he's as good as any. Same can be said for David Nickens in Texas.

I’d be willing to bet his first recommendation would be to delete DI, swap to an LS he knows well, and put a TH400 in. It’s tried and true and will go fast.

Don't know which engine he's running in his '87 Camaro, but Justin runs a COPO/Maggie Greg built. His and Nickens' engines have won many championships.

My main point is that there are many good engine builders but all max effort engines can break. I broke my GTO engine 4 or 5 times. Only broke my T400 once with 1700hp/1350tq

No doubt. The only part of a COPO similar to our cars are the chassis and body panels. The intricacies of the this platform are less about the base engine that a good ‘engine builder’ knows about and much more about the direct injection, computerized systems, and most importantly, the modern transmissions and making it all work with IRS. Someone focused on Pro Stock and winning races likely wants nothing to do with those as they have inherent limits and the rules don’t require them.

Somewhat related, this R&T article was worth the read (they talk about the 'woke' EPA now monitoring forums to look for shops to go after):

I actually went with RSP for my builds since IROZ was not only really backed up, but their prices were rather painful for seemingly basic builds. A lot of that felt like it was due to the popularity and notoriety they received in that community. I have a couple of their parts on my cars but, I don't think I'd ever take it to them for work. Miguel at RSP has been nothing but great and I spent a fair change less on my builds than I would have going to IROZ. He also has different philosophies when it comes to components and the necessity of them. I could be mistaken, but I'm highly confident that he hasn't lost a single engine but I can't say the same for IROZ cars.

But as far as your question is concerned, it's difficult to answer without getting specifics. For me, this is how I would break it down.

Vengeance: Highest-quality, premier LS/LT shop in the nation. Your dollar per hp ratio may be a little tough to accept but, they do works of art. $$$$$

Katech: Race development oriented and trusted by GM to work on their C6.R. Still very high dollar to power ratio. $$$$

LMR: Solid, down to earth dudes who can get you great results without destroying your savings. Great results, slightly above middle-of-the-road pricing. $$$

GPI: Results driven, small shop with no non-sense approaches to making cars fast. You won't necessarily waste money with their builds but, you really need to understand your goals. $$

Pray: Hardest-core dude on this list. He will do absolutely anything and everything in his power to make your car haul all the ass possible that you can afford and/or are willing to do to the car. His wait list is long and his patience is nil if you annoy him but, he will make your car hurt a lot of feelings. $??

Most if not all of those engines/cars are LS based as Jason pointed out.

I seriously doubt there's a Chevrolet engine he doesn't build. I gave Justin's engine as one example.

What Golen? I've seen his engines around the country, https://golenengineservice.com/lt1-lt4-engines/

Nickey Performance in Rockford Illinois. You will have to wait a year because they are backed up but it will be worth it.

Are we talking about assembling engines specifically or building a turnkey performance package for a 6th gen ZL1 where the engine is just a piece? I read OP's original question to be regarding the latter.

I first read it as an entire car, but as others point out, he also seems to say that he's asking only about an engine. Perhaps he'll chime in.

No. David Nickens, Conroe, Texas. Former partner of Stanfield who builds almost everything including my old 500cid Pro Stock motors.

Yep. He tunes for LMR and owns BRC as far as I know. Ryne's been showing up lately in a lot of LMR's YouTube videos, tuning in person at their shop in Houston. Having him there tuning elevates LMR, which was already on the short list of dominant late model GM performance shops.

Ryne was the man in SoCal for years, and my long term plan was to go to his shop when I got ready to build up a car, but he closed his shop and left California (can't blame him) before I was ready to make a move. I'll probably go through the top end of my new Z next year and add a larger supercharger, and when I do, I will be contacting Ryne.
