A lot to unpack in this article....
  1. GM is right there with Tesla in developing a battery with a million mile lifespan
  2. GM Ultium batteries will be capable of 3 - 400 mile range
  3. GM sees 600 mile range within reach
  4. GM developing 2 EVs for Honda

I've been berated for suggesting that Tesla prove their source of materials and battery manufacturing - but this quote proves I was on the right track...that said, I am not impressed with any Chinese sourced items, as their environmental standards are less than non-existent.

"After it was reported in May that Tesla and Chinese battery supplier CATL were readying a low-cost battery capable of lasting a million miles"

It doesn't prove you right or wrong. One thing Tesla has done since the beginning is they have worked with Chinese battery suppliers and technology for the cars they build in China. Not the same batteries or suppliers for the cars sold in US. In the US they operate their Gigafactory through a JV with Panasonic. At the current time, their CATL co-developed batteries do not find their way into US cars.

Fair enough. Can anyone prove Tesla hasn't source Cobalt from the Congo for any of their batteries...I've heard all the claims and never seen any actual proof.

I don't know of a way to verify either side of that claim. It should be known though, that part of the purpose of Tesla's work with CATL is to minimize / eliminate cobalt content. Same with GM's "million mile battery" project.

I read that, which is a good initiative for sure. EV still isn't the way of the future environmentally - I agree more with Gordon M (McLaren F1 designer) that hydrogen fuel cell technology is much cleaner overall.

Cleaner? Yes. But a whole new set of problems to solve for manufacturers and owners. From what I've seen, FCEV is best for repeatable routes (minimize amount of infrastructure to be built) and it is much better than battery electric for management of heavy loads. So, in theory, an over-the-road truck based delivery fleet (UPS, FedEx, DHL) that can build hydrogen refueling stations in their depot network would be the killer app for FCEV.

Cleaner and long term viability on resource availability etc - Gordon's words, not mine.

Agreed on your points Jim

Is that because the 2020 model run is going to be so short? Just about every article/magazine/blog expected the price to go up in 21

Pretty much. GM decided it wasn't fair for people who may end up with 2021s instead of 2020s to have to pay more.

Finally a step in the right direction. Why they didn't do this in 2015-18 is beyond me. The 19-20's were a step backwards from the previous trucks as well.
