and maybe even more with some additional mechanical grip (305/325 tires maybe) on a track like that. No wonder why so many S2000, FRS/BRZ and Miata owners use those huge wings at that track.

I was going to do Fr-Su, now Sa-Su at most. Will have a Red/Silver acura chumpcar if I make it at all tomorrow, green GMC truck and then the Focus will join for Sat/Sun and a buddy will be there with his blue Boxster Spyder Fr/Sa.

Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Nov 2017
My first opportunity to take the new car to a track was this weekend. Just over 2,000 miles on the car. Best Time was 1:10.96. I was running in the HPDE 1 group. I did graduate to the HPDE group for my next event.
There was Mustang that was running just a step slower than I was. We were well ahead of the other cars. Good guy, we're probably going to both go to the next NASA event in December. The car is an absolute blast to drive. A significant part of the track is a drag strip. Cornering around the tower on the the drag strip was a bit slick, once lined up you can head down the strip, but the first bit was sketchy. The instructors were very helpful. I was running on my own on the second day. But after talking with an instructor he offered to go out with me. The second opinion/instructor took me from running about 1:18 to 1:13 to about 1:11. https://youtu.be/KF40i4vYbuA |

Good Run!!!More experienced people than I could say more, and you can also gather only so much from a video at a track you don't know. The 2 things I would comment on would as a keyboard warrior would be to compress your brake zone on the straight, and carry more speed/track out more onto the straight. Both of these observations can be moot if track conditions aren't good, but they were the most obvious things I saw. When braking at the end of the straight it looked like you were only achieving 35-40% brake application and not really engine braking as much a you could. Now this will happen over time as you gain confidence, but its still good to be aware of. Now take this with a grain of salt, as you mentioned it being a bit slick and a mistake there = wall. You are coming onto the straight on the inside corner which means you have the whole track to your right to "track out" to with a some more corner exit speed.
Correct me if I am wrong here guys. Last edited by nasbagoat; 11-20-2017 at 11:10 AM. |

Engine braking is hardly recommended as a proper way of slowing down the car as it affects the balance and stresses the drive train.
Going wide coming onto that drag straight is likely not any faster as the corner leading to it is slow and exit looked very slick. Sometimes it is faster to rotate a car quickly and then point it straight vs tracking out fully. The L hander at the end of the straight looked fairly wide, so partial vs threshold braking may indeed work better there as it is better to brake earlier and lighter but nail the entry speed vs braking later and harder but over slowing the car. Nice driving IMO. Not at a limit but smooth and obviously fast for the group! Get as much instruction as you can, as learning how to gain pace by oneself early in the "career" can be a counter productive endevour. Besides even pros often seek tips et al especially at a new venue. Congrats for taking the car out: yes they are fantastic machines! I'd suggest moving up to PTM Sport 1 - it will free up the car a bit, while still maintaining Stabilitrak and TC. Then follow "small steps" principles and have bags of fun!!! |
