New wheels and tires = worse handling?
Hi all,
I recently upgraded wheels, and purchased a brand new set of the Goodyear Supercar 3 tires. I purchased the following wheels: Project6gr 10 spoke 20x11 +43 offset 20x10 +23 offset Standard size tires I have not weighed the complete setup but these wheels were suppose to be around 26-28lbs, so nothing extremely heavy. Coming off my stock wheels and tires with 10k miles on them, my handling is noticeably worse. Where I used to carve corners with ease, I now understeer. The car no longer feels like it's on rails like it was with the stock setup, rather feels more spongy in the corners, and the sidewalls of the tires are just rolling over. I cannot figure out why - the wheels did not get heavier, and I put a new set of the same tires on. The only thing I can think of is the front wheels offset seems like it is just slightly further into the fender, and it looks like it has slightly more negative camber. Anyone experience this? I didn't expect this different of performance when I only changed a set of equal size/weight wheels. Makes me want to put the stock set back on... I'll probably get an alignment just to see if it helps at this point. https://ibb.co/zXMNhhJ https://ibb.co/wzC3fhK |

Hmm this is tricky since it is a similar setup to stock. I don't know that wheel brand, but they are suitable offsets, very close to stock (I think stock is +25 in the front).
Stock wheels are forged. Are the Projecet6gr also forged? Not sure you could tell the difference in driving characteristics anyway. Maybe a wheel balancing issue? Correct tire pressure? Lugs torqued to 140 lb-ft.?

I run the sc3 with 1LE track alignment all the time. -2f/1.5r. These tires also like to be hot. If they aren’t warmed up I’d imagine stock Goodyears might be better… idk.

What is the bolt circle on your new wheels?

I have the stock SC3 tires on, they are brand new in the same size I took off the stock wheels.
I’ll try re torquing the lugs. Good question on the bolt pattern, I just asked for ZL1 fitment. They bolted up without issue. |

Are you running the same pressures as before??
New tires need about 500 miles to break in and wear off the mold release agent. Things to consider. |

I think WhiteMale and Chrome383Z are getting their guess right. It could be low air pressure in the tires, allowing the sidewalls to roll, and/or the tire compound not being warm enough to perform properly.

Tire pressures were around 37 psi in the front, I increased to 40 psi to see if it gives a more planted feel.
Interesting on the wear in and release agent. Maybe some patience will improve. Problem is I don't feel like it is a rubber/compound/heat issue, as it feels completely different as well. If it was a tire issue I'd assume it would feel the same under normal driving, but potentially just have less traction if not warm, or there is still release agent not allowing for proper traction. I may swap out my fronts with the stocks I still have just to get a real time comparison. |

I have the same issue. I think mine might be going from a 245 front to a 285 front though. The pulling and road tracking is HORRIBLE. I want to run the stock set up but love the look of the 1LE rims. The cornering is not very confidence inspiring at all. When I have my stock SS rims on with the Conti's it is on rails. 1LE replicas with Supercar F1's not so. Feels like it wants to break loose easier. I have done the alignment twice and it is always within spec.

I'd assume yours isn't a difference in tires either, as I was completely happy with the SC3, enough to buy them again and not try something different.

3mm of offset (stock SS 1LE or ZL1 front offset is 20mm) won't make a noticeable difference in handling. Something else is going on.

Get the alignment… I was pretty certain something was off from the factory, didn’t feel terrible, but knew something wasn’t right. My car handled even worse when I added 1LE wheels and tires- scary high speed float, tramlining, unpredictable turn in etc. There was too much toe in / too little camber both front wheels.
