ZL1 Brake pads - Stock or aftermarket??

Guys,

I road course my car. Car has seen a total of 4 track events over the past 3 years.

Still using original brakes/rotors and original pads. Car has 44,000 kms/ 27,000 miles.

Questions:
1. When should you replace your pads?
2. If I do replace my stock pads should I go with OEM or consider aftermarket?
3. Still using original OEM rotors.
4. Always change fluid to dot 4 when at track.

One last observation I noticed is the brake dust colour was a medium brown colour. Not sure this matters but thought I would share.

Thx in advanced for the feedback.

stock pads are fine especially If your rotors still look good. If you change to a different brake pad compound now, you will likely have to change the rotors. If you drive mostly on the street, track pads dust like crazy so keep that in mind (worse than stock and are noisy). My suggestion is to buy another set of stock pads and change them out. Some of the fastest cars here use stock pads and they are fine.

I replace my pads when they get to 50%. Under 50% the pads start producing more heat and they wont last two hard days at the track.
I use stock pads and rotors.
I use Motul Dot 4. I flush it and replace after every 10 track days.

Use stock pads and rotors with Brembo HTC64T brake fluid. I usually change the pads when they are a couple of mms from the wear sensors.

1) I wont start a track weekend unless 50% or more pad. I check thickness after each run.
2) OEM - you can't beat the value and those pads perform very well. This is the only track car I've had where I didn't have to immediately upgrade pads and rotors. Most people (I exclude all the really fast folks so I hope I don't offend anyone) that have issues with these pads are overbraking at end of straights
3) Just run SRF, that way you wont have to be changing just for the track

Well I must be one over braking or just damn fast??? Hahaha.

I'm coming from a 04 520 rwhp Z06 that was no slouch and since my son got it he put on a big brake kit and that thing not only STOPS! You can go waaay deep in the corners.

My 688 rwhp fat piggy is quite a bit faster on the longer tracks down the straight, but even with SRF fluid, upgraded non stock pads (stock pads weren't cutting it on the short course) I just about got chummy with a concrete barrier on the mondo course at wildhorse pass hauling it down from a buck fifty and making a darn near 90 degree turn at 25.

So for me, my frequent days of tracking are way behind me, but my observation says...this car is too fat and fast for slightly upgraded pads on serious straights, let alone the stock pads. And they were relatively new.

Cool….I’d say I must be at 50% or lower after 4 track events and having 27,000 miles.

Yes I use the motul Dot 4 and good to know I can get up to 10 track days. I might change it earlier because after 6 track days that will be over a 3 yr period for me plus I store the car for 6 months of the year.

Good stuff…advice so far seems to be consistent…stay with stock pads, change after they get below 50% wear and make sure to use dot 4. Ohhhhh as a bonus I elected to change my rear differential but I did that for peace of mind.

I think you are in the damn fast category!

Stock pads for Street + Track. Castrol SRF for Brake Fluid.

I track my stock ZLE quite a bit and have settled in on the stock rotors and the Hawk DTC-70 brake pads front and rear along with the Castrol SRF brake fluid. The Hawk pads are not that much more expensive than the OE pads and definitely give you more consistent braking, particularly in the later part of a 25-30 minute session. The behavior on the street has been pretty good as well with minimal squealing on the street. I was concerned that the Hawk DTC-70 pads might be too aggressive for the stock rotors, but so far I just have very typical heat checking. My goal is to get one full track season out of my rotors and so far, so good.

I use GLOC pads for both street and track duty. GS-1's for street, R12's and R10's for track, and Castrol SRF fluid. Incredibly consistent brakes all weekend no matter how much I hammer them.

After pen wore out...

After the stock rotors and second set of oem pads I went with Girodisk rotors and DTC-70 pads. This is better than oem for the track.
