It seems like we have some talented luthiers in here. Those are some great looking guitars. I’ve made a few over the years. I don’t have access to a shop anymore so I haven’t built any in quite a while. Those EVH replicas are great, I’ve done a few myself. EVH is what got me into playing guitar, and tinkering with them. I don’t get to play much anymore either. But it’s a great hobby to have.

So true, EVH got many people started on guitar! I was 14 when VH 1 came out and melted my mind! I dabbled a little before that but that album changed everything!

Thank you! Mine aren't true replicas, they more or less look the part but in no way truly accurate, I wanted them to be mine, my specs, my selection of parts, woods, etc. It is just so much fun to bring these to life!

I am very into set necks these days, making twisted versions of guitars everyone knows, but improved and different. Again, all to my preferences and certainly nothing you could buy anywhere, one of a kind and special.

It is a hobby, my salvation, my sanity. Building or playing it is the very best therapy I have! Takes the world away and leaves me with peace and joy!

Fret are installed, leveled and sanded.

I'm working on the bridge right now, after that it's pretty much setting up the strings...!

Thanks! I am really happy right now. Can't wait to get it finished. But I must not rush the last few steps as I always tend to do!

I'll see where Tru Oil brings me, but it really looks similar to Tung Oil. Smells the same, has the same color, applies the same way. I've never built layers with Tung Oil but I'll be curious to try it in the future... Maybe they are so similar that I will not see the reason why a small 9oz container of Tru Oil costs the same as a 1L container of Tung Oil...!

Tru Oil and Tung Oil are similar, but also different. Tru Oil, when applied ultra thin in built up layers. 1-3 per day (depending on dry time) and some scuff sanding (1000 or higher grit) or 0000 steel wool every 6 coats or so. I usually like at least 12-15 but you can go more, depends on what you want.
It can be a final satin, you can wet sand/polish for gloss. If the plan is to wet sand and polish, definitely 15 or more to avoid cutting through.

I find it is the best stuff. If I am not Tru Oiling, then I am spraying nitro lacquer.

I've never tried to apply more than 2 coats of Tung Oil, so maybe it doesn't build up layers same as Tru Oil.

Actually I've done 8 coats on the guitar and I lie it as is. I've let it dry for a day and will leave it tomorrow as well. If I ever feel it needs more layers, I can always add some later. But for now I love how the grain is half filled and how shiny it is. I am still debating if I want to do a little steel wool on it to make it satin. We'll see.

But I really like the finish. Thanks for the advice. It is way better than what I would have been able to do with a lacquer.

Yes, 8 coats is fine, and you can add more anytime, next month, next year, whenever. When it looks and feels right, it's enough!
Always a good idea to leave it at least a week to cure, much shorter time than lacquer. I like the satin look myself, but it depends. I have also just used a polishing compound like Novus 2 or similar, that leaves almost a semi-gloss which can be quite nice too. Old blue jeans make great polishing/buffing rags for Tru Oil.

I've decided to leave it shiny for now! I can always buff it later if I want to.

But now, a picture is worth a thousand words they say...
