GM uses a RED thread sealant on the trannys and rears.
Its not Loctite. Anyone know the part number? -Bobby

Glad to help.
I'd have some solvent(alcohol, acetone etc) on hand to clean up any excess. |

Per the service manual, the part number is 12346004 (used on the transmission plugs/sensors). I do not see sealant referenced on the SS differential fill or drain plugs, since I believe there's a nylon type seal for those.

Super old thread, I know, but just in case someone got curious as I did...
That red stuff they use on the OEM plugs, from my Google-fu, seems to be a product called Vibraseal, or Loctite 516. Look up "Loctite 516" and you will see pictures of bolts with that same red stuff you see on the threads of the plugs. It looks to be extremely difficult to get it outside of a commercial wholesale setting, and pretty expensive, too. It makes sense for OEM to use it because they can use the sealant on a ton of parts that may sit for months or years before they are sold and installed. For mechanics and DIYers, Permatex 592 is what you use(which is the same stuff as GM part number 12346004 mentioned above) on these plugs. It's white, but who cares, unless you feel like shelling out $100+ just for the right colour sealant.
