Looking into a new set of tires for the upcoming autoX season. Obviously the RE71r is high up on my list but has anyone got any experience with the Rival S 1.5? I got a set of 19" wheels to conform to class rules(SS 1LE), but was waiting to pull the trigger on tires til the new year.

I'm also gonna run a couple track days as well and still have the stock 1LE SC3 tires but when those run out, I'd like to be able to run the 19" setup as well.

Thoughts? Experiences?

I was 2-3 seconds faster per lap on the RE71R vs. Goodyear Supercar 3's. I'm going to continue to run them. No experience on the Rivals, so I'm interested in what others say.

I don't have experience with the RE71Rs, but have a little experience with the Rival 1.5s. The Rivals can really put the power down coming out of the corner, better than the SC3s. Lateral grip is good, I've seen mid 1.3xG peaks with sustained G of 1.18 and higher thru the whole corner at Autoclub Speedway in Fontana CA. The Rivals will slide if you want them to but its easy to catch the car. I didn't have any adverse effects to heat with the Rivals. My co driver and I sprayed the tires between runs and I never noticed a difference in times. I found that spraying the radiators and oil cooler down between runs helped more than spraying the tires. I have not run them on a race track yet so no experience there.

From what I gather from other people who have driven on both, they say the RE71R is more precise, doesn't like to slip, and gets greasy easier. The Rivals survive the heat better, a little more numb on steering feel, okay with slipping.

My reasoning for getting the Rivals first was as follows- 2 driver car so heat is a concern, the set was a little bit cheaper, and a local CAM-C fast guy tested both out on his modded GT350R and was 0.6sec quicker on the Rivals than the RE71Rs at Autoclub Speedway(our main autocross venue). I will try out the REs soon, they are supposed to be a bit better in the cold(and wet) than the BFGs.

personally I like the RE71R. Ive been on the tire since its been out and BRG has had to make 3 different compounds to keep up with it.

I know the RE71R very well and im comfortable with it. Its turn in response is a lot better than the BFG but the BFG has a higher lateral grip. They also take heat a lot better than the Bstone.

Since I live up in Wisconsin the RE71 works in all the weather we get up here. Cold, wet, warm... our temperamental weather and short season. People I know on the BFG tend to struggle in the early part of the season when our events are about 45 degrees out.

Thanks for the feedback guys. I'm in the Pacific Northwest and we don't see any real hot events, only 2-3 over 80. Sounds like the BFGs might struggle unless I can convince a buddy to co-drive and get/keep some heat in them. But they might last longer if I decide to take them to the track day.

I'm in the PacNW. I've driven both the Rival-S 1.5 and RE71R on Gen6 Camaros.

On a warm Packwood day I'm faster on the Rivals, but for season-long autocross in this climate I'd go RE71R without question.

I just got 19s for my 1le and choose to go with the stock compound Goodyear s3 in 305/325 I feel they are slower than the re71 but not but much and hoping I can make up the difference in width plus they are much cheaper than re71 and should last longer for road course (I also autox bs)

Are you running 10"/11" front and rear?

I ran last season in my Focus ST on the RE71R because that's what everyone ran in GS. That car was tricky, it would overheat the fronts and the backs wouldn't get enough heat until run 3 or 4. Torquey FWD car problems.

Just ordered 305/30-19 Rivals square for the Camaro to run in CAM. We'll see how it goes. I'm a little worried about getting heat in them on cold days, but here in NC there are not many cold events

I'm in the same boat as you OP, the recent price increase of RE71R's makes the BFG's extra tempting, I've got a co-driver in my car which should help get heat into the tires but I'm also up in Canada and we definitely have some cooler weather.

I did some back to back testing on the Packwood Tour practice course 2 years ago in my old ND on Rivals vs/ RE71R's and also found the Rival to be slightly faster. I'd say Packwood is a low grip asphalt. But then that same year did the same test on the Lincoln Test n' Tune course and found the RE71R to be faster

Where did you order the 305/325 19 GYSC3's from? What did you pay?

Thanks for the advice folks. I ended up going for the RE71s.

Anyone have recommendations on cold/hot pressures for autoX? I found the Goodyears were pretty good right around 29 cold / 33 hot. Similar numbers for the Bridgestones? or something different?
