I see some recommendations for the Conti DWS. Before deciding on the snow tire and wheel package I looked at replacing the stock GYs with the Contis and selling the GYs.
I had a quote for them mounted and balanced at $850. They get pretty high marks as an all season.
I didnt look at Firestones. I never thought of them as top tier tires. I also dont look at Generals because back in 1985 I bought a Bronco 2 and it came with General all seasons. I got 2 flats in the first couple of weeks. One from a rock in a gravel driveway. So Ive never once considered them since.
HAHAHA... funny how that works.
Still and all these tires run at or below the cost of truck tires. I rotate my truck tires every 5,000 miles. Thats why I may go to a square set up on the SS after its all said and done.

It's probably water under the bridge now that you got the extra winter tires, but those A/S Contis or another quality all-season set probably would've worked just fine and lasted you a long time in a square setup. If only GM gave us at least a few tire options to choose from with these cars.

Let's be honest though, we aren't really in the "snow belt", the amount we get typically isn't excessive. The main reason I try not to drive the Camaro in the winter is the freaking salt and not that much the snow.

Yea. The past few years have been easy. 2010ish though we had snow after snow. I manage a municipal agaency so I am the guy with the salt. My department uses as little as we can get away with. I havnt bought salt in over 2 years and my shed will only hold 50 tons. The damn State puts salt down by the millions of dollars when theres rain that might become salt. I hate it.
My 2007 GMC 2500 had wheel well rust through last year. And from new I rinsed and care for it religiously. Thats how I ended up in an alumaduty.
All things considered Ill probably go square with all seasons when the GYs wear out. But who knows.

True that, I remember my kids digging an entire cave into the snow in 2013

What would happen if townships didn't salt at all and just relied on plowing and people's common sense (tires) and driving ability? Lawsuits or just blowback from media? Also, is there nothing else to be used, sand or something that isn't corrosive when mixed with water?

My wife's SUV is rusting already, which is ridiculous and very frustrating. Washing it is a damned if you do, damned if you don't situation, because unless I'm mistaken, brine is way worse than caked on salt. I wonder if getting it washed weekly or even more frequently in the winter would help.

By the time I wear out the GYs I will decide if Im putting 4 rims and tires of the same size on and rotating.
Your in the sunbelt. Im in the snow belt. What I was not prepared for was needing to buy the winter tires right away. We have 3 months left on a QX50 and I was just going to park the SS unless it was sunny and not salty.
I was surprised to find out you cant even leave the car outside in the sub freezing temps and drive off because the rubber could be damaged. And they are supposedly like driving on steel wheels below 40. Not exactly true as I have been driving them in the 30s and they were fine.
But Im too paranoid to leave it like that so I bought the snows right away.
Im wondering how you made out since this thread is 3 months old.

Well bud, all I can post is what I have so far. These are the 4 tires I bought:

245/40ZR-20 Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+ (W- or Y-Speed Rated) 5-Rib Tread Design XL

I've driven in as cold as it's gotten here so far (32deg, no ice), and I've driven in the rain at least twice - no issues. I don't really have any wear reporting to make given the age - will let ya know in another ~9 months? The way we've budgeted for tires is me having to change every 18months (1.5yrs). If I can at least meet that, I'll be fine. If they last longer, then even better.


Again, my baby is primarily for commuting, and some quick math says she'll put on about 20k/year. I'll give what details I can to help other judge the longevity, but I know every person's different.


With these tires: so far, so good.

Reporting back in.


To add a small detail I purchased said tires on 10/26/2020 and they hit the pavement about 2 weeks later. I'm 3mo shy of two years with these tires and they are still running strong. My next check is around that 2yr mark, so I'll try and get actual grade/numbers for a true update. 20+mo out of these tires that ran me, after install, around $1100 is not bad at all, especially given I was dreading having to drop $1500+ every YEAR. I do recommend these tires btw, if anyone's looking to buy. I'll try and report back in around 3mo or so from now.

I just mounted some PS4S on my ZLE and they are a little mushier than the GY3R but they are what I had.

They are definitely more of a road tire. I picked up the whole set for 1200.
