Behind the chip shortage...

I came across this video and wanted to share because I think it does a good job of calling out some key points as to why the chip shortage has already taken as long as it has, and why it will continue to rage for quite a while longer...

https://www.wsj.com/video/series/wsj...2-C47AB60E2DCD

WSJ published an article that contained this video and in the article they discuss how Samsung has announced a significant uptick in spending on chip manufacturing, including building a new plant in the US. There is no location for that plant yet, and AFTER IT'S BUILT it will take a year before new chips are ready to ship...

Thank you

It will be fun once China eventually takes over Taiwan and all of the chip plants there. China just took over the UK's largest chip plant (which makes semiconductors mainly for the auto industry), https://www.bloomberg.com/news/artic...u-k-chip-plant.

We are handing everything to China as we speak. Just like we handed the Taliban Billions in military equipment without a shot fired.

And that never works, it never works because the rest of the world will continue to move forward, while we stall out due to lack of competition and no one wanting to buy our old crap. Emerging nations will always be able to make a widget cheaper or faster, etc. Our strength is not making widgets, it's new processes, new technology, research, etc. If we try to compete in making widgets, we'll get beat every time and the emerging, 2nd and 3rd world nations will get stronger while we get weaker on the world stage.

It comes down to the fact that it's a compromise and balance.

They can make it cheaper.
Can they make it better? Perhaps.

But if anyone the market cornered (chips, OPEC, etc) how much they SELL it for and who determines who and how many you can get? This is the problem....

Saw that a while back.

Bottom line: Don’t do business with socialist governments.

I’m curious what electrical systems changes GM might have made to the 22 camaros. I have a hard time believing they didn’t do some sort of value engineering to get around the semi conductor shortage.

I assume by "we" you mean we the people. If the American people actually demanded things be made in the US things might change. But we are addicted to Walmart. Me? Been in a Walmart twice in my life. Watched as they devastated small farm towns in the Mid West back in the 80s. Now hugely profitable selling us good from LCCs. So that's simply us wanting low prices.

We used to have a furniture industry, we used to have a textiles and clothing industry, all pretty much gone because we are addicted to "cheaper" and a "better deal".

If you ever come up with a great idea for a new product, your first step is to find someone who can speak Chinese.

I don't usually find myself agreeing with Number 3, but this is one of those days. Cheaper ≠ better, and no outsourcing "game" can be played forever, which we are finding out the hard way.

I think it goes a lot deeper, though, as there are a number of issues that combine together.

George Carlin conveyed this very simply: "Have you noticed that their stuff is shit and your shit is stuff? Get that shit off of there and let me put my stuff down."

Too many people focus on the price of an item and give no consideration to the value of that item for that price, or what sort of ongoing costs are associated with an item.

The Taiwan thing will never happen. Even if they did, anything and everything there of critical nature is rigged to go kabloooooie. Would literally lose all that capacity overnight.

I am willing to pay more if its quality and says made in America. The American job you save may one day be your job. I have no interest in saving a dime if it says Made in China.

💯

It's beyond frustrating that 99% of products are fully or partially made there. The last 18 months have been weird, but even now some things are perplexingly cheap because of outsourced labor, which spurned irresponsible behaviors that are damaging on the long run (and we are likely in the "final stretch" of said run).

I don't think the US market is too small and the fountain of capabilities to shallow to have laws that strongly favor domestic. Someone said the "world will keep on moving ahead and nobody will want our old stuff"... but then I must ask the question why we couldn't remain competitive. There is no good reason. How about gradually letting China be China and be the supplier for their own needs... unless it's too late, but IMO it's only too late when you're dead.
