1986 Corvette with the Doug Nash 4+3

I found a nice 1986 Corvette with the notorious Doug Nash 4+3 manual overdrive transmission for sale for less than $6k. It’s in good shape with only about 60,000 original miles and the current owner just replaced the clutch, slave cylinder, and throw-out bearing.

I’m thinking about buying it just for fun to toy around with and experience the “thrill” of the new 4+3 manual that wowed the automotive world in 1984

Funny to think back how revolutionary those early C4s were at the time and are pretty much as fast as a Chevy Malibu today.

I probably won’t buy it because outside of routine maintenance parts are made out of unobtainium. But it’s still a cool time capsule. I could dig through my tapes in boxes I haven opened for 20 years and rock my Def Leopard tapes

For 6K I would be seriously think real hard about it, you can still get parts if your patient and I think they have hit rock bottom as far a price is concerned.

It would just be to tool around with for fun, nothing serious. At the price like BSN said you can’t really lose even if it doesn’t work out. I wouldn’t be losing my shirt.

It’s true what they say as you approach 50 (I’m 46)….. you start reliving your childhood.

I was a kid when they came out and thought they were the coolest thing ever. Of course today they’re duds. It would be just for kicks

Having owned an '86 Iroc in modern times, there's nothing on a C4 that would scare me. I'm only 4 years younger than you, OP. Understanding TPI takes some time if you're not used to diagnosing electronics but it's not that steep of a learning curve. There are plenty of specialty salvage yards out there for everything else.

I'm sure you're not looking for a money sink, but for me, this would be an ideal "low risk" first resto-mod effort. Kind of cool with low collectability, this will never be on the block at Barrett-Jackson, but you can try a lot of new things using salvage grade parts without being too hard on yourself if you make mistakes. If keeping it 100% original isn't the goal (I gather you want to keep the original transmission), figure out how to mount a junkyard Gen3 5.3, see if that trans will mount or if there is an adapter plate for it.

Probably a bigger commitment than you want to sign up for if you're hedging on buying it. ...and having the space to have a dead roller for months at a time.

Are these ones with a fake exhaust tip?

I looked for it today and couldn’t find it. If I do I’ll message you. I have too much other stuff going on right now to buy it anyway. It’s red with tan interior from Texas.
